My mom almost always suppresses tears of passionate rage when asked about the current state of affairs for women and girls. It makes sense, given that she has two daughters and a five-year-old granddaughter and just this weekend Congress failed to keep our government functioning because they wouldn’t work in a bipartisan manner.

Now that I am a parent, I very much share her sentiments and don’t want my daughter growing up to think that men who dehumanize and disrespect women, win. So when Donald Trump was elected president, I was anxious and also, frankly, very pissed. How could I ever explain to my daughter that a man like him was ever our leader?

Then the Women's March on Washington happened and I saw the silver lining. Donald Trump was our president -- despite losing the popular vote. And while we couldn’t change that, we could resist and make our voices heard at the voting booth and at marches and events across the country.

And just yesterday, women here in Iowa, and all across the country, did it again.

Strong, admirable women have spoken out against wage discrimination, sexual assault, and inequality, and stepped up to run for office. Now when I think about how I’ll talk to my daughter about this time in American politics, I know just what I’ll say.

A bully who lacked empathy, humanity and decency was elected, but amazing women, like her Gram, stepped up and fought back and championed a brighter future for her.

2017 was the year women said #MeToo and Time’s Up. So let’s make 2018 the year we elect more women than ever before -- donate now to help my mom fight for women all across the country.
