Ed Smart is hitting the network morning shows tomorrow and called to ask what he could say about the status of the ICAC funding. Below is my response. I tried to flesh out both the politics and the practicalities... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Camille Cooper <camillecooper@protect.org> Date: Sun, Dec 12, 2010 at 7:45 PM Subject: Omnibus/ ICAC fate To: ess@sisna.com Ed, Thanks for calling and thank you for using your national media time in the morning to convey how important the funding in the Omnibus is in order to rescue more children. As I mentioned on the phone, Senator Reid, Senator Inouye and the Vice President's office have all been responsive about trying to help. Protect hasn't received any response at all from Republican leaders. Here are the basics: There is $60 million for the ICAC's (full funding for Protect Act) in the Omnibus which they are trying pass in the Senate right now. If the Omnibus fails to pass, they will pass a CR at 2010 spending levels. In order to preserve the full funding for the ICAC's in the CR the following language would need to be inserted under COPS in the report language: *<<Within the funds provided, $30,000,000 is for the hiring and rehiring of officers who will be assigned to Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces [ICACs]. These funds, combined with those provided under the Office of Justice Programs heading, will fully meet the level authorized for ICACs under the PROTECT Our Children Act of 2008.>>* * * I'm glad that your family's ordeal is finally behind you ( legally that is), and thank you for always using your media clout to keep the safety of all abused kids front and center. -- Camille Cooper Director Legislative Affairs The National Association to PROTECT Children www.protect.org 828-318-6382 www.protect.org/childrescuepetition www.facebook.com/protectnow -- Camille Cooper Director Legislative Affairs The National Association to PROTECT Children www.protect.org 828-318-6382 www.protect.org/childrescuepetition www.facebook.com/protectno
