Another day, another offensive, racist-baiting tweet from a sitting United States Congressman.

After President Trump referred to Haiti as a “sh*thole” country and questioned why we allow Haitians to immigrate here, our own Steve King followed suit and went on a twitter-tirade demeaning people of color in our communities.

This is not the America I know. This is not the Iowa I know. And this is not the way our leaders should act and speak.

Immigration is complicated and many voices deserve to be at the table, but not if those voices are only there to insult and demean others. As humans, we deserve more.

I want to solve the problems we face with respect and dignity. But we cannot do that when the President and Representative King continue to say these awful things. This isn’t just about the issue of immigration anymore. The offensive statements that King and Trump make on a regular basis are a slight against human decency. No reasonable adults should generalize and marginalize another group of people based solely on the color of their skin.
