Last night the University of Alabama beat the University of Georgia in a National Championship football game that will go down as one of the great contests in college football history. The action on the field was exciting, even breathtaking. But there was something that happened on the sideline that I will remember the most.

Alabama was losing 13-0 at the half and the Crimson Tide’s coach Nick Saban made a game-changing decision for the second half of the game. He would replace his starting sophomore quarterback, Jalen Hurts, with a talented freshman, Tua Tagovailoa, who hadn’t started one game all season. Jalen Hurts is a legitimate star QB whose career record was 26-2 going into the game. But it is what he did when he was replaced that made him a super star in my view.

When replaced, Hurts didn’t show a bit of disappointment, jealousy, anger, or any other emotion that most athletes in his situation could have understandably exhibited. Instead, he sent the signal that he was supportive of his replacement, his coach’s decision, and his whole team. Hurts put his team above himself. What a smile and what an inspiration. Jalen Hurts is a true champion.
