I am pleased to share a few updates on WFP USA activities, including an op-ed that will be included in The Hill that salutes Board Member Bob Dole who will receive the Congressional Gold Medal tomorrow at a ceremony in the US Capitol. Senator Dole represents the best of the nation. He embodies the true heart and soul of the American people, as evidenced by the longstanding US legacy of leadership in fighting global hunger. Save the Date for the WFP USA Global Humanitarian Award Gala Event

Mark your calendars for April 24, 2018, when we will host the WFP USA Global Humanitarian Award Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City.

As you know, the Global Humanitarian Award (GHA) acknowledges individuals or groups that have made significant contributions to a global humanitarian cause or issue, while exhibiting the highest standards of integrity, discipline and initiative. The inaugural award was given to Sandy Berger, just days before his passing.

The 2018 award will be presented to long-time WFP partner, UPS. The event will also feature “Global First Responders” – those who deliver lifesaving emergency aid during humanitarian crises, as well as those who bring to light the human cost of natural disasters and man-made conflicts around the world. This theme provides a way to showcase the strength and scale of UPS’s support for humanitarian efforts in some of the hardest-to-reach places across the globe, and to recognize the journalists and news organizations who bring these stories to the public. This event also provides an opportunity to introduce WFP’s role as the largest humanitarian organization in the world to a wider audience.

The overarching goals of the event are to:
· Engage titans of industry, and mobilize them to take action in support of WFP;
· Increase awareness of WFP’s work around the world; and
· Raise funds from a new audience of individuals and corporations in New York.

In the weeks to come, we will share updates on how the event is shaping up, including a list of host committee members.

New Vice President for Communications Joins WFP USA

On January 2, we welcomed Jessamyn Sarmiento to WFP USA as our Vice President of Communications. For more than two decades Jessamyn has worked as a champion for a better world. She has served across government, nonprofit and corporate sectors, helping these organizations successfully navigate within an increasingly competitive and cluttered environment.

A little bit about Jessamyn’s background: Prior to joining World Food Program USA, Jessamyn led communications and public affairs for the National Endowment for the Arts and previous to that she served as senior vice president and partner at Fleishman-Hillard International Communications, where she developed and managed a highly successful consumer marketing practice representing government, non-profit, and international organizations. She also served as the vice president of communications and spokesperson for National Public Radio (NPR) and before that was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve in his Administration, first at The White House and then at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). While at USAID, Jessamyn was the communications lead for the U.S. Coordinator for Kosovo Relief, where she spent time in the field and back in Washington ensuring the story of U.S. government policy and support was being told accurately and effectively to a global audience.

Her work has been recognized with honors, including a Silver Anvil from the Public Relations Society of America and a Gold Quill from the International Association of Business Communicators, and others. She executive produced the video series, “The United States of Arts,” which was nominated for a 2016 and 2017 Primetime Emmy Award and a 2017 and 2018 Producer’s Guild Award.

We are very excited to have her on the team; she’s already hit the ground running and is off to a great start.

WFP USA Op-Ed Honoring Senator Bob Dole in The Hill Newspaper

Tomorrow, The Hill newspaper will publish an op-ed honoring our board member, Senator Bob Dole, for receiving the Congressional Gold Medal. The op-ed is being featured as “sponsored content,” which means it will take up an entire page in the publication. A preview of the piece is below:
