Truman National Security Project ! This month, Truman board member Robert Abernethy generously volunteered match all donations to Truman Center. In addition, Truman hosted a number of workshops for the new Certified Truman Trainer Program, and Truman members across the country have stepped up to run for Congress in 2018.


Dan Misch

Dan Misch served as a nuclear engineer and lieutenant onboard a ballistic missile submarine, specifically as a tactical watch officer in charge of the ship's navigation, engineering, and strategic mission on three nuclear deterrent patrols and a reactor refueling overhaul. In 2012, he joined the U.S. Department of Energy as a Federal Project Director at Argonne National Laboratory, where scientists are working on solutions to our most pressing challenges. He performs project and program management oversight for next-generation supercomputer acquisition, design, and construction of new research facilities, cross-country nuclear material disposition, site-wide sustainability and reliability goals, and business development through strategic partnerships. Misch has a BS in physics from the
U.S. Naval Academy and is pursuing an MA in public policy from the University of Chicago. He is a contributor to the

Veteran's Energy Seminar to educate other military veterans on international energy security issues. The program is based on similar training by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources, which introduces Foreign Service Officers to the fundamentals of energy fuels, markets, regional conflict, and international policy. The first seminar was held in Chicago in December 2017 with 38 veterans from 10 different states across the country; it featured lectures and panels from experts across industry, government, and academia. Building upon the momentum, 2018 events are planned in Chicago, New York, and San Diego with the goal of creating a sustainable and scalable program.

Certified Truman Trainer Workshops
After an initial rollout of the Certified Truman Trainer (CTT) Program late last year, Truman is well on its way to certifying our first cohort of trainers. We have conducted 3 workshops, with more than 30 participants, to orientate candidates to the CTT program and review the finer points of training through an Effective Presentation Skills 101 course. Following the workshops, candidates will move on to creating their personal narratives and preparing for final auditions and evaluation. After new members orientation, more workshops will be conducted in Washington, DC, and around the country to accommodate the tremendous interest in the program. More than 80 Truman members have signed up to be certified trainers in areas such as Military 101, Strategic Communications, International
Development and Security, Cybersecurity 101, Bridging the Gap, and Energy and Climate Security 101.

Trumans Running for Congress
In 2018, Truman members across the country have stepped up to run for Congress: There are 14 members who are challengers, and an additional 3 members who are already incumbents. During President Trump’s first year, Truman members have stepped up the fight against the Trump Administration’s draconian, xenophobic agenda by speaking out against such policies as the travel/Muslim ban, the ban on transgender individuals in the military, the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, and the decertification of the Iran Deal. Now, for 2018, these Truman members are engaging in the fight for our democracy and our values in the biggest way possible: by running for Congress across the country. Visit
