The future of our state was ultimately determined not by a clear voter mandate, but by the proverbial luck of the draw.

Over the course of a roller-coaster few weeks, Shelly Simonds won Virginia's hotly contested 94th district by the slimmest of margins – one vote. As if almost by magic, at the last second the Republican opposition produced a questionable ballot for Simonds' opponent.

Surprise, surprise.

Despite our legal battle to prevent that controversial ballot from being counted, the Board of Elections accepted it and declared the race deadlocked. The tie was broken in January by drawing lots from a ceramic bowl.

We simply can’t let the next races come down to chance: Help us end the long reign of Republican control of the House of Delegates by making a contribution of $5, $10, $25, or any amount of your choosing.

In the last legislative session we Democrats proposed bills to help prevent gun violence, ensure equal pay for equal work, provide in-state tuition for DREAMERs, and guarantee equality for our LGBTQ community.

Most didn’t even get a hearing. None passed. That single dubious vote changed everything.

Winning back control of the Virginia legislature is within our reach. We cannot allow any more elections to turn on the outcome of a glorified coin flip.
