President Donald Trump met with embattled Veterans Affairs nominee Ronny Jackson in the Oval Office Tuesday and continues to stand by him, a White House official said.

The official described it as a "positive meeting." Trump said earlier on Tuesday that he would "always" support Jackson, the White House physician, but said it was up to him whether he wanted to keep seeking the VA gig.

"What does he need it for?" Trump said of Jackson. "To be abused by a bunch of politicians that aren't thinking nicely about our country? I really don't think personally he should do it, but it's totally his ... decision."

The White House official said Jackson currently has no plans to withdraw from consideration for the job.
