Today represents how far into the current year white women
need to work to earn the amount of money their male counterparts
earned during the previous year — three months and ten days
longer. For women of color and marginalized communities, the
disparity is even larger. It’s Equal Pay Day, a time to
acknowledge the fact that women are still being paid
significantly less than men for the exact same work.

We’ve made a lot of progress over the years to close the
wage gap between women and men, but it’s not enough. Just last
month, the Washington Legislature officially passed the Equal Pay
Opportunity Act (HB 1506), the first update to the state's equal
pay law since 1943.

Please join us in urging lawmakers to take immediate action
to level the playing field and give women the fair wages they

The Equal Pay Opportunity Act is a much-needed start to
addressing economic injustice in Washington State. The Equal Pay
Opportunity Act fights wage secrecy by ensuring workers can
discuss, disclose, or compare wages without unfair retaliation.
With its passage -- Washington is taking the lead in championing
women and families.

Unfortunately, the national GOP has taken us backwards in
this fight. In 2014, Senate Republicans blocked legislation to
close the gender pay gap. And last year, President Trump signed
an executive order rolling back the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe
Workplaces order, which required companies with federal contracts
to obey labor and civil rights laws.

On this Equal Pay Day, it’s more important than ever that we
join together to demand a solution to this persistent problem.
