As you know, we have been talking for some time about the need to ensure that our Board of Directors is reflective of the USGLC bipartisan brand, similar to our National Advisory Council. When Mark Green stepped down, we realized we had diminished our Republican representation on the Board. One idea is to add a new officer position, Board Co-Chair, to allow for bipartisan leadership on the Board.


In order to be sensitive to the current and future political environment, we have been talking about adding a Republican Co-Chair to serve alongside Dan as our Democratic Co-Chair. This strategy also keeps the Center (501c3) Board leadership aligned with the Campaign (501c4) Board leadership. As you know, the Campaign Board has a business and NGO serving as Co-Chairs, and we thought having Republican and Democratic Co-Chairs on the Center Board creates a nice synergy.


We are pleased to announce that former Republican Senator Norm Coleman has agreed to serve as Co-Chair alongside Dan, pending Board approval. Therefore, the Board will need to vote on the following items:

1. Change in leadership structure to add the new position of Co-Chair

2. Elect Norm Coleman to the Board and to serve as Co-Chair

Please note that this change does not necessitate a change to the bylaws since they already provided for the Board to elect additional officers. Nor does the creation of the position of Co-Chair require the organization to always have a Co-Chair. It merely allows the Center to have the option to have Co-Chairs if and when the Board of Directors chooses this course of action.


As for our nominee, Norm was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 from Minnesota and during his time in Congress, was a staunch advocate for development and diplomacy on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Since leaving Congress, Norm has remained a champion, serving as USGLC's Minnesota Co-Chair, and speaking at many of our state and national events. Both of us have talked with Norm, and if approved, he is prepared to fully participate in Board activities. Below please find his biography.

Senator Norm Coleman
Senator Norm Coleman dedicated more than three decades to public service. He was a student activist in the 1960s, Minnesota's chief prosecutor and Solicitor General in the 1970s and 1980s, and Mayor of St. Paul in the 1990s. He represented Minnesota in the U.S. Senate from 2003-2009. In 2011, Senator Coleman returned to his legal career, as Senior Counsel at Hogan Lovells. Currently, he chairs the firm's Government Relations and Public Advocacy Practice.

During his six years in the U.S. Senate, Senator Coleman served on the prestigious Foreign Relations Committee. He was Chair of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee and ranking member of the Near East subcommittee, working to foster closer ties with our hemispheric neighbors and protect America's interests in the crucial Middle East region. Senator Coleman also Chaired the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Under his leadership, the Subcommittee identified more than $80 billion in waste, fraud, abuse, and potential taxpayer savings. As Mayor of St. Paul, he developed major public-private partnerships, including the return to Minnesota of a National Hockey League presence.

Working together to get things done has been the Senator's motto throughout his career and is certainly how he operates in the collaborative environment at Hogan Lovells. It also applies to how he works with former colleagues on both sides of the political aisle.

Whether it is on Capitol Hill, in corporate boardrooms, or in foreign consulates, Senator Coleman utilizes his relationships and experiences at the highest levels of the political process to help his clients. He has the unique ability to quickly dissect issues and frame solutions to challenges, all with his characteristic warm manner. Senator Coleman is a sought-after champion for those looking to navigate the complexities of the Washington political and regulatory process.

The concept of service is close to Senator Coleman's heart; he is active in a variety of political organizations and nonprofits. An article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune profiling his "working the halls of power" in Washington, D.C. notes that he wields more clout today than he did when he was in office. Senator Coleman serves as Chairman of the Board of the American Action Network, a center-right "action tank" located in Washington, D.C. He sits on the Board of the Network's sister organization, the American Action Forum, a forward-looking policy institute dedicated to keeping America strong, free, and prosperous. He is also the Founder of the Congressional Leadership Fund, an independent expenditure "super PAC" whose mission is to retain and expand the House Republican majority. He serves on the Advisory Council of the US Global Leadership Coalition and currently serves as Chairman of the Republican Jewish Coalition. Senator Coleman served for nine years on the Board of the National Endowment for Democracy.
