President Amy Gutmann has been named to Fortune’s list of the world’s greatest leaders. She was cited for being a first-generation college-goer who has made it possible for many others to achieve the same goal and for “blockbuster” fundraising that enabled Penn “to offer the largest all-grant financial aid program in the country.” The magazine also lauded her as “a vocal backer of international students and immigrants.”

To tackle blindness caused by open angle glaucoma, a condition in which fluid builds up in the eye and puts damaging pressure on the optic nerve, Engineering senior Brandon Kao of Placentia, Calif., and Wharton seniors Rui Jing Jiang of Irvine, Calif., and Adarsh Battu of Fremont, Calif., came up with VisiPlate, a nanoscale ocular implant that shunts away excess fluid. With support from the President’s Innovation Prize, the students can further develop and test the device to take it to market.

A study led by Ian Blair and David Lynch of the Perelman School of Medicine shows that statin cholesterol drugs may help patients with the rare disease Friedreich’s ataxia, the most common form of inherited ataxia, a condition characterized by a progressive loss of coordinated movement and balance.

Cells can sense and respond to surface curvature in very clever ways, as shown in research led by Kathleen Stebe and recent graduate Nathan Bade of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, in collaboration with Randall Kamien of the School of Arts and Sciences and Richard Assoian of the Perelman School of Medicine. The results, which revealed that curvature is a profound biological cue, could pave the way to new tools in the field.

In 1970, Frederick Steiner, now dean of the School of Design, co-organized a teach-in at the University of Cincinnati on what became the first national Earth Day. Choosing books on the environment, he found “Design with Nature” by Penn professor Ian McHarg, which led him to pursue graduate degrees here. “Earth Day changed my life,” Steiner says. “It’s so personal to me.” Sunday was the 48th anniversary of that inaugural event.

Eugene Park of the James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korean Studies in the School of Arts and Sciences examines the proposed summit between the leaders of the United States and North Korea. Park, who was born in Seoul, specializes in the sociopolitical history of Korea since the 17th century. “Both sides have too much invested in this for it to fail,” he says. “They will do what they can to meet and, moreover, try to produce something positive.”

In Mumbai, waste sorters known as kabadiwalas represent a crucial yet marginalized labor pool, diverting would-be trash from landfills by sorting and selling recyclables. With support from a President’s Engagement Prize, Wharton seniors Peter Wang Hjemdahl of Norway and Svanika Balasubramanian of Oman will connect these workers to larger recycling operations through a digital marketplace, boosting wages and reducing waste.
