In yesterday’s Washington Post (http://e2.ma/click/5jrdc/h9ytd/lwzodb), Jonathan Capehart made the case for a national conversation on poverty – “one that builds consensus and the political will needed to move from talk to action.”


As Mr. Capehart noted, the President is in the best position to make that happen. That’s why Save the Children and 23 other national organizations are asking President Obama to call for a new National Commission on Children during his State of the Union address next week. The first such Commission, created by President Reagan and Congress in 1987, led to some of the most effective anti-poverty initiatives in our nation’s history, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.


We are confident that a new Commission is the key to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children in this country, including the 16 million who live in poverty.
