Tuesday - February 7, 2012 From the School This Week's Query How can we find a balance of helping others as well as making sure we still care for ourselves? Notes from Sally This week’s Assembly: The Upper School Dance Ensemble This is a full week! CTPs continue this morning and tomorrow; please help kids remember their pencils both days and a calculator for Wednesday. There is a program tonight for 8th grade parents tonight, and there is a program tomorrow night called Authentic Success: Raising Children and Adolescents Who Are Prepared to Thrive in a Challenging World for any parent who is interested. Don’t forget the celebration of Cynthia Grady’s newly published book on Thursday afternoon; books will be sold, and both Cynthia and the illustrator will be available to sign your copy at the reception. And finally, Friday brings the 7/8 dance and parent peer groups! Whew! A reminder that this Friday, February 10th, students will have the chance to participate in a Skype discussion with Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich, the author of this year’s Big Read, 8th Grade Superzero. There are still copies of the book available to borrow from the library and office. Anyone interested should contact Mrs. Clarkson or Leslie Segal if she or he has questions or would like to participate. We hope to have a big turnout for both our 5/6 and 7/8 sessions! One note about Minimester: The local programs take place during school hours, so drop-off and pick-up are at the regular times and transportation will be provided for any program from school. Lunch will be provided, and aftercare will meet each day. Parents of students in the Musical: please pick up your child each day in the garage, not on 37th Street, unless your child reports to aftercare following rehearsal. Aftercare parents are picking up on 37th Street, and there is just not enough space for both programs to use that area. In addition, the area by the Security Office is more supervised in case a parent is running late. Thank you! At the middle school math meet on Wednesday at St. Patrick’s, our team from Sidwell Friends ended up winning first place with the highest composite team score!! Congratulations to 8th graders Neeknaz Abari and Charlie O’Mara, and 7th graders Luke Oh, Alan Zhang, Amal Mattoo, and Jason Souvaliotis, all of whom were high scorers at the meet. The SFS Middle School Debate Team will participate in their third tournament of the year this Saturday at Walker Mill Middle School, 800 Karen Boulevard, Capitol Heights, MD 20743. The tournament is from 9-4, so come and watch. Parental support is encouraged and volunteer judges are also needed for as much time as one can spend there. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact Burt Nadler. 7/8 parents: remember to check the website for updates on athletic contests. Any changes will be posted under the Athletics tab on the front page – no need to even log in to the Parent Portal! Instrumental Music Notes Sneakers Pit Band Tuesday 2:15 – 4:00 Rm. 101 5/6 String Ensemble Wednesday rehearsal period Rm. 101 7/8 String Ensemble Wednesday rehearsal period Rm. 101 Jazz/Rock Band Thursday 3:45-5:00 Rm. 101 Chorus Rehearsals This Week Wednesday, February 8th NO AM Boys Ensemble (CTPs) Boys Ensemble WILL rehearse during rehearsal period Math Meet Results Congratulations to the Math Counts Team of Amal Mattoo, Alan Zhang, David Hauge, Sammy Singer, Sam Blazes, Jason Souvaliotis, Jack Ellert-Beck, Jordan Chernof, Matty Cheng, and Luke Oh, who helped Sidwell Friends earn a 3rd place finish as a team at the Chapter Math Counts Competition. In addition, Sam Blazes and Jason Souvaliotis placed 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the individual competition. As a result of their fine performance, the Math Counts Team will compete at the State Competition in early March. Please note that Math Counts practices will continue as usual on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30 in Andrew Callard’s room, and are open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Pennies for Patients During the month of February, Ms. Brownlee's advisory is leading its fourth annual "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society program that helps collect important funds for blood cancer patients. Simply by collecting and donating pennies, the research on and patient services for blood cancers increases, and more patients are able to have effective treatment. Last year, students in the DC metropolitan area raised $700,000 to fight blood cancer and provide services for patients and their families. There are collection boxes in the main offices of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, as well as in Zartman House and the Fox Den. Donations can also be made online at http://nca.sy.llsevent.org/SidwellFriendsUpperSchool. Any and all support is appreciated. If you have any questions, contact Lauren Brownlee at brownleel@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8180. Stop Motion Projects from ArtRageous The iStopMotion animation projects we did at Artrageous are ready for viewing! They are posted on YouTube and can be found at this address: http://bit.ly/artrageous12 These projects were made by students of all ages. They only had a few moments to make them, just imagine what more time and planning could do! PA Announcements Authentic Success: Raising Children and Adolescents who are Prepared to Thrive in a Challenging World On Wednesday, February 8th, from 7-9pm in the Robert L. Smith Meeting House, Ken Ginsburg, M.D. will be speaking to parents about raising successful children and building resilience. Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. He works to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to build resilience.
