This Week's Query
How can we distinguish wants from needs?
Notes from Sally
This week’s assembly: The Fabulous Chinese Acrobats. Parents are welcome, as always!
Next week is CTP week. Tests will be given on the mornings of Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to all students in Middle School. Students should get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast. They need to have #2 pencils, and a calculator is permitted for the test on Wednesday.
We hope that you can come celebrate the publication of I Lay My Stitches Down, a new book of poems by Middle School librarian Cynthia Grady. On Thursday afternoon, February 9th, we will have a reading of some of the poems with reflections by members of Vertical Voices, our 8th grade playback theater troupe at 4 PM in the Drama Studio. This will be followed by a reception and book sale in the library with both Cynthia and the illustrator of the book. Copies of the book will be sold and will be available for autographs. You are welcome to join us for this exciting occasion!
The next 7/8 dance will be held on Friday, February 10th from 7:30 – 10 PM in the dining room. Admission “price” will be an item for our winter food drive – students should watch the daily bulletin for specifics. 7/8 peer groups will meet on campus the same evening.
Thanks, everyone for getting Minimester request forms in promptly. Groups will be posted by the end of next week.
The semester for 5th grade chorus and for 8th grade arts classes ended last Friday. Reports will be posted in Educator Online by the end of this week – we will send a newsflash to let you know they are ready.
Julia Porter would love to have a few more volunteers to help in the office. We particularly need folks for Wednesday afternoons. Please contact her if you can help!
Has your address, phone number, email information, or emergency contact information changed? Please update your information through the Parent Portal! We want to know how to reach you.
Conversations with Sally are coming for these grades: 5th grade on Monday, February 13, 6th grade on Wednesday, February 15th, and 7th grade on Wednesday, February 22nd (please note change of date.) All are held at 7:45 AM in the dining room. Hope to see you there!
Please be sure to read the message from Anne Renninger elsewhere in this letter about keeping belongings safe in the locker room.
Family Science Night will take place on Tuesday, February 28 from 6:45-9:00pm. Buses will depart from the Wisconsin Avenue campus at 6:15pm and return by 9:20pm. We have space for 125 people from Sidwell. The program is geared for students in 3rd grade and up (younger children should not attend). Selected museum galleries will be open before the program. The evening includes the IMAX film Hubble 3D and a presentation by scientist Jeff Goldstein on how we use pictures and images to determine the origins of our solar system and what makes up our universe. Those of you who have attended in the past know that Dr. Goldstein is a dynamic presenter and makes complex space science accessible to all. If you are interested in attending Family Science Night, send an email to reserve your spot to Sam Francis, LS Science Teacher. (franciss@sidwell.edu). Indicate how many people in your family will be attending and the name and grade level of any Sidwell students. We will be charging a $5 per person fee to cover the cost of the buses with a $15 per family maximum. The Air & Space Museum will not allow individual entry to the museum on that night.
Thanks so much to the members of the A-ZSU and the students who attended the Diversity Leadership Conference for their work on our assembly last Friday – it was terrific!

Authentic Success: Raising Children and Adolescents who are Prepared to Thrive in a Challenging World
On Wednesday, February 8th, from 7-9pm in the Robert L. Smith Meeting House, Ken Ginsburg, M.D. will be speaking to parents about raising successful children and building resilience. Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. He works to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to build resilience. If you have an any questions about the program, please email Gaby Grebski, US Counselor, at grebskig@sidwell.edu.

LinkedIn Group
Would you like to connect with other Sidwell Friends parents on LinkedIn?
The Parents Association would like to invite you to connect with other SFS parents and staff on LinkedIn, the online social media network for professionals. We have created a LinkedIn Group exclusively for current parents, faculty and staff. Membership is optional and limited to members of our school community. We have created this group to help members of our community get to know each other better, participate in http://www.sidwell.edu/parents/parents-association/linkedin-group/index.aspx
ARTRAGEOUS: AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE!
The PA Arts Committee would like to thank in this public forum the many individuals who helped bring our SFS community together, and, in addition, welcome a visiting community, on Sunday afternoon - all in celebration of the arts. First, a huge thank you to the performers who stepped into the limelight to share their talents and to the parents who helped to bring that talent to the right place at the right time. Another GARGANTUAN thank you goes to the arts faculty from the lower, middle, and upper schools for their active participation and leadership, providing opportunities to try out activities that many children have never tried before. We also send out an especially LOUD thank you to the many parent volunteers who stepped into the chaos to bring a measure of control. THANK YOU one and all for helping to bring ArtRageous 2012 to full bloom.
Next to New Sale -- Thinking Ahead
The Next to New Sale chairs are always looking for great ways to "Reuse, Renew, and Recycle" and even though our annual sale just took place in October, we're already looking forward to next year. You can help by bringing your extra shopping bags to the Middle School where we will be collecting them all beginning Tuesday, January 24th through Tuesday February 28th (collection box located in the lobby near the reception desk). We need department store bags, paper grocery bags, reusable cloth bags, Ikea bags, etc - we'll take any undamaged, non-plastic, shopping bags with handles. In addition to using them for the 2012 Next to New Sale, we'll be sharing some with Martha's Table so that families in need can take home donated clothing in nice bags rather than plastic bags. For more Information contact Anne Honn, Next to New Sale co-chair, at anhonn@gmail.com

Quaker Quotes
"The primary purpose of the Meeting House is to serve as the place of shared reflection for Upper and Middle School students and their teachers. At other times, the Meeting House can -- and should --provide a dynamic forum for families, alumni, neighbors, Quaker and community organizations, and student groups from elsewhere in the City and beyond -- to actively participate in dialogue and reflection hosted by the School that promote Quaker values of peace and reconciliation, social justice and service to others. The establishment of a broad-ranging "Quaker Conversation" that enables members of our extended community to share their knowledge and experience, and that roots Quaker testimonies in the examination of real world hardships, can give voice to our students as they discover what it means to "let your life speak." More than anything else, we see this Quaker Conversation as at the heart of Sidwell Friends' commitment to lifelong learning and action."
