Dear Parents of Sidwell Friends School Students; When I distributed our new statement of Long Range Priorities in November, I promised a meeting in late January where parents could discuss the key themes in the plan and share in a conversation about implementation measures that can be expected in the near future and the long term. This coming Monday, January 30, is our meeting date, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Quaker Meeting Room on the Wisconsin Avenue campus. All parents are welcome. This will be our first opportunity since the distribution of the plan to discuss the broad implications of this document with parents. Katie Sloan, Clerk of the Board of Trustees, and I will make a presentation, followed by an opportunity for parents to share questions and observations. A fresh copy of "The 2025 Challenge: Long Range Priorities" is attached to this email message. We will have additional copies available for those who are in attendance Monday evening. A word on the nature of this plan for the educational program at Sidwell Friends: This is not a detailed map for a new curriculum. Nor is it a blueprint. I feel it is best described as a set of compass headings, directing our energies as we engage in the ongoing processes of program evolution. Changes in the school program will emerge over time as faculty and administration work together within the cycles of curricular revision. Now, with the completion of the Long Range Priorities, these cycles will be informed by a thoughtful, forward-looking assessment of the ways in which school learning must evolve to prepare this generation of children for lives of service and success in the heart of the 21st century. A glance out the window suggest that spring now comes in January. I hope you all have a chance to enjoy this unseasonable weekend weather. Sincerely yours, Tom Farquhar Head of School Sidwell Friends School
