Wednesday - January 25, 2012 From the School Message from Lee If your child has difficulty accessing the internet or a digital device for word-processing and email at home, please contact Rachel Jackson, Upper School Academic Technology Coordinator, for assistance at 202-537-8175 or by email at jacksonr@sidwell.edu. First semester grades will be posted online this Friday. Unofficial transcripts, also found in Educator Online, will be updated with 1st semester grades and posted online by no later than Feb 6th. Please feel free to contact your child’s advisor and teachers if you have any questions or concerns. Upper School Faculty and Staff met with 14 college admissions administrators from across the country on Tuesday, January 17 to discuss the landscape of college admissions and to visit the School. It was exciting for them to see our extraordinary community and for us to have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback about the process. We all agreed that we want students to be on fire, not burnt out, when they leave high school and that the journey will be different for each student. We found the day to be so valuable that we are already planning another program for next year that will include an evening session for parents. Peace, Lee The Variety Show is This Saturday -- Don't Miss It! The Variety Show celebrates its 10th Anniversary on Saturday, January 28 at 8:00 pm in the Kogod Arts Center. The show is less than a week away and tickets are selling fast – click here to purchase your tickets NOW! SFS Student tickets are just $10. Adults are $35 (2 for $60); teachers and young alums (’01-’11) are $25. You can also purchase an extra ticket and donate it to a faculty or staff member. Sponsorships are also available. This gala showcase of talented alumni who have become professional performing artists is always a fun-filled evening of fabulous entertainment for the entire family. The wide-ranging talent on display will inspire your children, as they see that dreams of a future on the stage, in the recording studio, or in the concert hall can come true for SFS graduates. And, you'll spend a relaxing evening enjoying the show and the reception with the performers that follows it. To top it off, all proceeds go to financial aid. The line-up of performers, SFS graduates from the 60’s through the ‘00’s, is listed here. Be sure to order your tickets before the show sells out! Authentic Success: Raising Children and Adolescents who are Prepared to Thrive in a Challenging World On Wednesday, February 8th, from 7-9pm in the Robert L. Smith Meeting House, Ken Ginsburg, MD will be speaking to parents about raising successful children and building resilience. Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. He works to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to build resilience. If you have an any questions about the program, please email Gaby Grebski, US Counselor, at grebskig@sidwell.edu. A BIG Thank You... ...to all who contributed their donations, time, food, transportation and musical talents to the 11th Grade Community Service project on Sunday. There was an abundance of heart put into this event by our students and parents. Despite a slow start, with more volunteers than people to serve, the kids stayed enthusiastic and upbeat. A highlight was when a homeless man spontaneously started rapping to the the music of our student musicians. There was a loud round of applause from all the students who seemed to see the beauty in the moment of human to human connection. That moment captured the essence of why were out there -- to create some warmth, light and joy for those in need on a cold and gray January day. Thank you for creating a meaningful experience for all involved! Nancy Hyatt, Andrew Trotter and Kirstin Zinger Wondering what to do with all of the post-Holiday Shopping Bags? The Next to New Sale chairs are always looking for great ways to "Reuse, Renew, and Recycle" and even though our annual sale just took place in October, we're already looking forward to next year. You can help by bringing your extra shopping bags to the Upper School where we will be collecting them beginning Tuesday, January 24, through Tuesday, February 28 (collection box located outside Susannah Parker's office). We need department store bags, paper grocery bags, reusable cloth bags, Ikea bags, etc - we'll take any undamaged, non-plastic, shopping bags with handles. In addition to using them for the 2012 Next to New Sale, we'll be sharing some with Martha's Table so that families in need can take home donated clothing in nice bags rather than plastic bags. For more Information, contact Anne Honn, Next to New Sale co-chair, at anhonn@gmail.com. Other News Quaker Quotes "I especially want to suggest that we impoverish ourselves spiritually when we close ourselves off too quickly from the witnesses with whom we disagree, or when, to appropriate their words for our own beliefs, we translate or transpose what they say into the worlds and ideas with which we are already comfortable." - Paul Lacey, 1995 “Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman (melissa@ecologicflooring.com ), Holly Moore (htmoore@gmail.com ) and Cindy Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com).
