Eighteen years ago, a U.S. Senator from Delaware authored the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) -- designed to reduce domestic violence in America. His name was Joe Biden.

The bill passed with bipartisan support. And over the next 18 years, domestic violence rates dropped by over half.

This is a law that has done tangible, measurable good for women and families. It's enjoyed bipartisan backing every time it's been up for reauthorization. But last year, extreme Republicans in Congress allowed it to expire.

This is a bill that provides critical resources to rape crisis centers, women's shelters, prosecutors, and hotlines all across the country -- including here in Delaware.

Throughout the past two decades, nearly 3,400 women and children sought safety in local shelters in our state. More than 21,000 calls were fielded by local domestic violence hotlines.

The reauthorization of VAWA before Congress right now will expand these vital protections even further. I'm proud to say that Delaware's delegation to Washington stands united behind the legislation. And we're determined to see that it passes both Houses.
