The assembly this Friday will be presented by members of the 7th and 8th grade student diversity organization, A-Z SU, and by students who will attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference on Thursday at Sandy Spring Friends School.

January 23-27, 2012 is National No Name-Calling Week. No Name-Calling Week is a national annual event when schools sponsor activities aimed at ending name-calling. This Thursday 45 6th-8th grade students will attend a conference on the topic of anti-bias in middle schools.

This year’s BIG READ is 8th Grade Superzero, by Olugbemisola Rhuday-Perkovich. We hope you will participate in the BIG READ and encourage your son or daughter to as well. We are excited to announce that students will have the opportunity to participate in Skype sessions with Ms. Rhuday-Perkovich! On Friday, February 10th, students who have already read the book will be able to bring questions and chat with her and discuss the book. There will be separate sessions for 7/8 and 5/6 students to accommodate the different schedules. If you or your son or daughter would like to read the book, there are copies that can be checked out from the Middle School Library, Ms. Porter at the front desk, and Ms. Phillips’ and Leslie Segal’s classrooms. This Wednesday, January 25th, several eighth graders have chosen to protest hurtful labels as part of No Name Calling Week. They will wear words they have overheard in our community in order to raise awareness about the power of language. Some of these words are inappropriate like “retard,” while others are taken out of context like “terrorist,” or “awkward.” Students will have the opportunity to think more about the effects of these words as a community during Friday’s assembly. The more explicit words will be restricted to the 7th and 8th grade floor and will not be included in assembly when younger students are in attendance. All members of the Middle School are invited to sign a pledge posted in the hallways to stop the use of hurtful language.

All Middle School parents are welcome to join us Wednesday night for the Middle School PA meeting. Our speaker will be Upper School Director of College Counseling Eric Monheim, and the subject for the evening will be "Looking Ahead to College: Keeping Things in Perspective." This program was presented two years ago and was a popular and helpful look ahead at the college process. We hope to see you there!

Parents are also invited to join us for Meeting For Worship on Thursday morning in the Bob Smith Meeting Room from 8:10 – 8:40.

We hope to see you at the Arts Activities this weekend! In addition to Artrageous and the Variety Show, our 8th grade Playback Theater Troupe will be performing on Friday night.

8th grade parents – mark your calendars for the Upper School Curriculum Program on Tuesday, February 7th at 7 PM in the Meeting House. This is an important meeting about the transition to Upper School.

As winter weather threatens, please be sure that you have reviewed plans with your son or daughter in the event of an early dismissal. Phones are available in the school for their use if they need to call you. If school closes early, there will not be aftercare. A reminder that all Middle School students must be in a supervised activity by 3:45 each day (2:20 on Tuesdays.)

Variety Show This Weekend -- Don't Miss It!


The Variety Show celebrates its 10th Anniversary on Saturday, January 28 at 8:00 p.m. in the Kogod Arts Center. The show is less than a week away and tickets are selling fast – click here to purchase your tickets NOW! SFS Student tickets are just $10. Adults are $35 (2 for $60); teachers and young alums (’01-’11) are $25. You can also purchase an extra ticket and donate it to a faculty or staff member. Sponsorships are also available.

This gala showcase of talented alumni who have become professional performing artists is always a fun-filled evening of fabulous entertainment for the entire family. The wide-ranging talent on display will inspire your children, as they see that dreams of a future on the stage, in the recording studio, or in the concert hall can come true for SFS graduates. And, you'll spend a relaxing evening enjoying the show and the reception with the performers that follows it. To top it off, all proceeds go to financial aid. Vertical Voices Performance

Vertical Voices Playback Theatre honors the human experience by bringing personal stories to life on the stage in a performance on Friday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the 37th Street Middle School Drama Studio at Sidwell Friends School. Vertical Voices Playback Theatre is a troupe of committed student actors that replays stories on-the-spot in front of the audience. Playback is an exciting way to learn about the community. Reservations are recommended. Call: 202/537-8150. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted for a Playback Theatre service learning project at the Milton Hershey School in May.

Artrageous 2012: "The Arts in Bloom" is HERE!

The schedules are full to bursting and the arts studios await your visits! Come sing, dance, create, build, listen, and move in the beautiful, new Upper School Arts Center on Sunday afternoon, January 29th, from 1:00-4:00 p.m.. New this year: David Merlin-Jones and teachers from the after-school music lesson program will introduce your children to several musical instruments at the Instrumental Petting Zoo. This chance to touch and play instruments takes place from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Instrumental Room in the Arts Center. Another first - Sidwell Friends School will host a performing group of dancers and percussionists visiting us from the Arts andTechnology Academy of Anacostia. Their performance will take place in the Meeting House from 1:50-2:10 p.m. More spectacular surprises await you, so don't miss out on this SFS community-wide event.
Donations for Boxopolis and Totem Poles at Artrageous

Artrageous needs your boxes – any size and type – for Boxopolis. And, we need paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, gift wrapping tubes, etc. for the totem pole project. All items can be left in the Upper School garage. At the end of the drop off lane, on the right hand side, there is a bike rack area. Look for signs for Boxopolis drop off. Next to New Sale -- Thinking Ahead


The Next to New Sale chairs are always looking for great ways to "Reuse, Renew, and Recycle" and even though our annual sale just took place in October, we're already looking forward to next year. You can help by bringing your extra shopping bags to the Middle School where we will be collecting them all beginning Tuesday, January 24th through Tuesday February 28th (collection box located in the lobby near the reception desk). We need department store bags, paper grocery bags, reusable cloth bags, Ikea bags, etc - we'll take any undamaged, non-plastic, shopping bags with handles. In addition to using them for the 2012 Next to New Sale, we'll be sharing some with Martha's Table so that families in need can take home donated clothing in nice bags rather than plastic bags.
