Tuesday - February 14, 2012 From the School This Week's Query How does my role as a consumer impact human beings as well as other animals outside of my community that I may never meet? This query was written by a group of 8th grade students who have proposed that we change the candy that is stocked in the Fox Den to reflect our commitment to fair labor practices and opposition to animal testing. This is under discussion here at the Middle School this week; I encourage you to talk to your kids about their thoughts and encourage them to both do their own research and to share their thoughts. Notes from Sally This week’s assembly is the Annual Black Student Union Show. It’s a good time for reminders about 37th Street drop off and pick up habits – please keep pulling all the way forward in both the morning and the afternoon. No U-turns in the Hearst driveway, and students who are dropped on the opposite side of the street must cross at the crosswalk. Also remember not to block the driveway of the Washington Home. Thanks so much! Reminders – 6th grade Conversations with Sally tomorrow, and 7th grade next Wednesday. Thanks so much to Shelley Schonberger, Gretchen Sierra-Zorita, and the volunteers who helped put on a great 7/8 dance on Friday night! Congratulations to the Sidwell Friends Middle School Debate team and new co-coach, Lisa Blatt! At the third tournament of the season, a diminished (only four teams in this round), but enthusiastic, Sidwell team continued to collect hardware for Mrs. Selby’s office. With 155 debaters on 54 teams from 11 schools competing, Sidwell received the third place trophy for percentage of wins (every Sidwell team won at least two rounds). In addition, the team of Anisa Hasan-Granier, Samuel Rangel and Amal Matoo placed eighth overall as a team. Finally, individual medals for speaker points were won by Zach Mazlish (4th overall) and Amal Matoo (8th overall). A terrific effort by all! The next tournament is March 17. Re-Enrollment Reminder Contracts must be submitted online by Tuesday, February 21. Please call the Admissions Office if you have any questions. Thank you. Instrumental Music Notes No Pit Band/Orchestras this week (Mr. Henderson is attending a conference) Next week – Pit Band Tuesday, Full Orchestras Wednesday, Jazz/Rock Band Thursday Chorus Rehearsals This Week 7/8 Choral Rehearsals the week of February 13th Tuesday, February 14th: Boys Ensemble 7:25AM Wednesday, February 15th: Boys Ensemble 7:25AM; Girls Ensemble during rehearsal period at 12:55 Pennies for Patients During the month of February, Ms. Brownlee's advisory is leading its fourth annual "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society program that helps collect important funds for blood cancer patients. Simply by collecting and donating pennies, the research on and patient services for blood cancers increases, and more patients are able to have effective treatment. Last year, students in the DC metropolitan area raised $700,000 to fight blood cancer and provide services for patients and their families. There are collection boxes in the main offices of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, as well as in Zartman House and the Fox Den. Donations can also be made online at http://nca.sy.llsevent.org/SidwellFriendsUpperSchool. Any and all support is appreciated. If you have any questions, contact Lauren Brownlee at brownleel@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8180. Other News Quaker Quotes "I will oppose it (slavery) with all the moral powers with which I am endowed. I am no advocate of passivity. Quakerism, as I understand it, does not mean quietism. The early Friends were agitators; disturbers of the peace; and were more obnoxious in their day to charges, which are now so freely made, than we are." Lucretia Mott -- "National Anti-Slavery Standard," November 3, 1860 Quaker Quotes is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman (melissa@ecologicflooring.com <mailto:melissa@ecologicflooring.com> ), Holly Moore (htmoore@gmail.com <mailto:htmoore@gmail.com> ) and Cynthia Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com <mailto:ctcabin@gmail.com> . We welcome ideas. Thanks to All for a Great Rowing Victory! Sidwell Friends hosted the inaugural National Capital Erg Invitational on Sunday February 12. The Sidwell Friends Rowing Team wishes to thank all members of the community and all participants for making this a terrific success. Nearly 200 people showed up to row (including Head of School Tom Farquhar). Four area high schools sent most of their teams, two local rowing clubs also showed up in force and a world record was broken—master rower Jill Gardner (60) set a new world record in the women’s 60-69 division (for complete results for all rowers visit www.NationalCapitalErg.org.). The team and their parents could not have hoped for a more successful start to this new event, and thank all of you who helped out in so many ways, and especially to the school for graciously offering the athletic center as the venue. We are already looking forward to next year, and hope to see you all there!
