Message from Lee

Many thanks to all for the sweets on Valentine’s Day!
In preparation for next year’s course selection process, Collection today will be a presentation of the Upper School Curriculum by Mamadou Guèye, Academic Dean, and the Upper School Department Heads. The same presentation will be given to parents this evening at 7:00 pm in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room . Course selection is done online and will open on February 29. If you have any questions about this process, please contact your child’s advisor or Mr. Guèye.
10th Grade Service Project: Casserole Bake for the Homeless

Join us in the Upper School Dining Room this Sunday, February 26th from Noon until 2 pm. 10th graders and their families will be assembling casseroles to deliver to Martha's Table and Thrive DC.

We also need volunteers to assist with set up from 10:30 am until noon, to help with clean up from 2 to 3 pm and to bring extra can openers and measuring cups for use in preparation (labeled with your name).

Community Service Family Project

Community Service Family Project, Sunday March 4, 10 am - 2 pm. The SFS community is invited to work with Behrend Builders of the DCJCC, at Olaiya's Cradle located on Capitol Hill at 739 Eighth Street SE, Washington DC 20003. Please note the change in the location of this service project. Olaiya's Cradle, a program of Sasha Bruce Youthwork, is a supportive, independent living program for homeless young mothers ages 18-21 and their children, for up to 18 months. Women are self-referred, and receive individual counseling, comprehensive maternal and infant health care, life skills training, education and career guidance, and child care support and parenting training to enable them to achieve self-sufficiency. Residents graduating from the program receive follow-up support and housing assistance to help them maintain stability.

We will work under the supervision of the staff of Behrend Builders to refurbish this shelter by painting, doing hands-on service and maintenance work. Behrend Builders will provide all necessary tools and materials. We encourage you to donate your time and efforts to this worthwhile project. This service project is suitable for ages 13 and up, and we will be able to take 25 volunteers. For more information and/or to volunteer, please contact June Das Gupta by Wednesday February 29.
Pennies for Patients

During the month of February, Ms. Brownlee's advisory is leading its fourth annual "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society program that helps collect important funds for blood cancer patients. Simply by collecting and donating pennies, the research on and patient services for blood cancers increases, and more patients are able to have effective treatment. Last year, students in the DC metropolitan area raised $700,000 to fight blood cancer and provide services for patients and their families.

The latest SFS Playback Theatre performance features both Middle and Upper School students, as well as Synergy in Action Playback Theatre Company from Silver Spring, MD. The three groups will combine troupes to perform for INTERSECTIONS: A New America Arts Festival at The Atlas Performing Arts Center, on Sat., February 25 at 11 a.m.
