FEC FIRST QUARTER DEADLINE PASSES: The filing period for first-quarter fundraising reports has ended. There are a ton of numbers out there to sort through - but here's Score's list of some of the candidates who came out of the first quarter looking particularly good or bad:

WINNERS: Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, KY-Sen ($2.7 raised, almost $5 million on hand), who outraised Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; Republican Ed Gillespie, VA-Sen ($2.2 million raised, $1.97 on hand), who had a huge first quarter in the race and almost matched Democratic Sen. Mark Warner's $2.7-million haul; Republican Thad Cochran, MS-Sen ($1.7 million raised, $1.5 million on hand), who took his primary challenge seriously and brought in five times his fourth-quarter number; Democrat Kathleen Rice, NY-04 ($1.47 million raised, $1.3 million on hand), who raised more for her Long Island House race than many Senate candidates did for statewide bids; Democrat Mike Honda, CA-17
($650,000 raised, more than $1 million on hand), who outraised Democratic challenger Ro Khanna for the first time this cycle.

LOSERS: Democrat Mark Pryor, AR-Sen ($1.22 million raised, $4.4 million on hand), who was outraised for the second quarter in a row by GOP Rep. Tom Cotton and needs his early investment in TV ads to pay off in future fundraising; Republican Tom Corbett, PA-Gov ($1.4 million raised, $5.9 million on hand), who was outraised by Democrat Allyson Schwartz and who spent twice as much as he raised this quarter; Democrat Clay Aiken, NC-02 ($233,000 raised, $125,000 on hand), whose American Idol fame didn't do much for his fundraising ability; Democrat Mark Begich, AK-Sen ($1 million raised, $2.8 million on hand), who was outraised by GOP candidate Dan Sullivan; Republicans Paul Broun and Phil
Gingrey, GA-Sen ($345,000 and $326,000 raised, respectively), whose fundraising hauls were considerably less than fellow GOP candidates Jack Kingston's and David Perdue's - and definitely less than Democrat Michelle Nunn's $2.4 million.

FIVE BIG-PICTURE TAKEAWAYS, via POLITICO's Byron Tau and Tarini Parti: "1) Karl Rove's Crossroads is alive and kicking ... 2) 2016ers quietly prepare ... 3) Vulnerable Senate Democrats are outraised by their challengers ... 4) Democratic donors are plenty engaged in 2014 ... 5) Tuesday's fundraising numbers barely scratch the surface."

MILTON WOLF RELEASES FIRST TV AD: Campaign Pros had it first: Kansas Senate challenger Milton Wolf, who's taking on incumbent GOP Sen. Pat Roberts, will release his first ad later today. The spot both outlines his biography and takes aim at Roberts for his long tenure in D.C. "After 47 years in Washington, Kansas is a distant memory for Pat Roberts. Dr. Milton Wolf wakes up every day and saves lives, just like his father did,' the ad says, featuring footage of Wolf in his white coat in a hospital. 'Milton's a conservative with his own plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, fight wasteful spending and pass term limits for Congress. Then Milton will come back and practice medicine - because
nobody should spend 47 years in Washington.' The ad will run on Fox News statewide for two weeks, at a cost of about $50,000. Wolf's chances in the race were hurt badly by the story earlier this year about his Facebook posts of deceased patients' X-rays; there's been no recent polling, so it's tough to tell where he stands now. MARY LANDRIEU'S CAMPAIGN AD: FAKE FOOTAGE OR FAKE OUTRAGE?

TODAY ON POLITICO -

TED CRUZ FACES 2016 SKEPTICS IN SOUTH CAROLINA: POLITICO's Manu Raju filed this dispatch from on Sen. Ted Cruz's appearance in South Carolina last night and what his reception says about his 2016 prospects: "By the time the Texas Republican senator finished speaking Tuesday night, an adoring audience hailed Cruz and his no-compromise, combative style of conservatism that has made him the scourge of the GOP establishment but a hero of the tea party. ... But even in deep-red South Carolina, a well-received speech full of Cruz's signature flair is no guarantee that the firebrand politician could win the early primary state in a run for his party's presidential nomination in 2016. ...
The Republican Party here, as in many other states, has many factions. And in interviews with activists and GOP leaders across the state, a common theme emerges: Cruz can clearly energize the far right, but he has yet to demonstrate he can pull together the necessary coalition of business-minded Republicans, libertarians, social and fiscal conservatives and moderate-leaning voters who are eager to see a Republican win the White House come 2016."

JEB BUSH FACES 2016 SKEPTICS IN HIS OWN HOUSEHOLD: POLITICO's Katie Glueck: "Republican donors and operatives are chattering about [Jeb] Bush's publicity-shy wife, so worried she isn't on board with a 2016 White House run that they're urging people in the family's orbit to make the case. ... Donors also wonder whether Bush is willing to subject his family and their personal lives to the inevitable scrutiny that comes with a national campaign."

RNC BEGINS CONVENTION SITE VISITS IN DENVER TODAY: The Republican National Committee is well on its way to narrowing down the city that will host its 2016 convention - and the next round of selection begins today, as members of the RNC site selection committee tour Denver. They'll head to Las Vegas on Thursday, then do two other two-day swings through the remaining finalist cities: Dallas and Kansas City on April 24-25, and Cincinnati and Cleveland on April 29-30. The visits will help the committee narrow down the cities further before the official site visits from the full RNC delegation.

PRO-BENACQUISTO ROBOCALLS BEGIN IN FL-19: The Susan B. Anthony List is launching a series of robocalls, including one by Mike Huckabee, supporting GOP state Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto in the final week of the special primary. The outside group reported spending $5,600 with Third Dimension Strategies in the effort Tuesday, and spokeswoman Mallory Quigley told POLITICO it's part of a $50,000 push in the final week that will also include mail.

SNEAK PEEK - PENCE TALKS FOREIGN POLICY IN BERLIN: Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is in Berlin today as part of his weeklong trade mission in Germany. He'll deliver a speech at the Hotel Adlon, right across the square from the Brandenburg Gate - where he'll talk foreign policy, one of his policy strengths and an area he'd likely showcase if he ran for president in 2016. Here's an advance look at what he'll say: "I believe the United States and the EU must respond with deeds more than words to strengthen our economic and strategic defenses. Europe and America should work together to strengthen our economic ties.... And, with continued instability in the Middle East, Iran's ongoing effort to
develop long-range missiles and nuclear technology, and Putin's annexation of Crimea and aggression in Ukraine, I believe we must take immediate steps to deploy a robust missile defense in Europe - especially Poland and the Czech Republic - to protect the interests of our NATO allies and the United States in the region. Stronger economic ties and stronger defenses is the strategic response to Russian aggression."

LIGHTER CLICK - The Palm Beach Post has some awkward video footage in which Florida Democratic candidate Charlie Crist walks up as the state's lieutenant governor, Carlos Lopez-Cantera, is in the middle of criticizing him to reporters:
