Hunter, Here's some information I sent to Service. I'm not as personally familiar with western Argentina - is Mendoza ski-country? And are Kathleen and the girls going to be travelling with you? If they are, and you're going to altitude, let me know and we can consider altitude meds. I was going to toss that out there before CO this year too. That may have been a contributor with Kathleen last year. In any case - just let me know if you need anything. Cool, V/R Kevin Chuck, Here's what I gathered. You can pass to the USSS Lead. - A high level of medical care comparable to that in industrialized countries is available in Buenos Aires and some other major cities. Medical care is substandard throughout the rest of the country. - For police emergency services, dial 911 in Buenos Aires (city/province). In Buenos Aires (city), dial 100 in case of fire and 107 for an ambulance. In the province of Buenos Aires, fire and ambulance numbers vary by location. The Tourist Police Unit responds 24/7 at 4346-5748 or toll-free 0800-999-5000 from anywhere in the country. - IF THEY GO DIVING: Recompression chambers are located in Puerto Madryn, Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santo Tome, and Mar del Plata. Before diving, check that facilities are operational. - Immediate cash payment often expected by private facilities for medical services. Although credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, there is no clear information as to whether credit cards are accepted for medical care. As long as they stay along the Pan American Highway there, malaria shouldn't be an issue - but GI concerns are. Below is info on the two hospitals that Ken Baron recommended and surveyed for a POTUS visit in 2007 to Buenos Aires. Doesn't look like there are any robust medical facilities to the west, in Mendoza. Not sure how fluid that border is with Chile - Santiago looks closer than going back to Buenos Aires on the map - but mountains, tough borders or country roads could make that untenable - Service can look at that. Otherwise, best bets throughout the country are back in Buenos Aires. Here are the Primary (Fernandez General) and Secondary (Hospital Aleman "German Hospital") medical centers, and our POCs: PRIMARY HOSPITAL DEMOGRAPHICS Last confirmed by on-site (full survey) on 3/3/2007 Fernandez General Hospital 3320 Cervino Ave., Buenos Aires Buenos Aires Argentina Main Phone: [+54] (11) 4808-2600 24 Hr.
