In February, eros and philos--romantic love and friendship--get all of the attention.But what of agape? Love that is committed, self-sacrificing, active, unconditional, and divine.

Jesuit Volunteers dedicate a year or more of their lives to serving others, people they have not met before and may never meet again. It's more than friendship that drives them, theirs is a labor of agape.

A Broken-Hearted Kind of Love

The sun shines magnificently through the handmade paper snowflakes haphazardly taped to the glass blocks of Isaiah House's westernmost wall. As I look at them, I can't help but be overwhelmed by this amazing sanctuary for those experiencing mental illnesses.

Ms. Shirley walks through the door, smelling of urine, wearing sweat pants tucked into her baseball socks, three hats, and a couple of hooded sweat shirts. The thingthat most concerns me about her is her swollen and bloodied finger. Ms. Debra calls up to my office, not to inform me that Ms. Shirley needs to bathe, but that she needs a doctor.

Isaiah House has introduced me to the most beautiful people, those who are often overlooked, or even considered expendable. Some of them wave and call out my name as I bike down Georgia Avenue, or stop and chat with me in line at the library, or come sit in my office and keep me up to date on current events.

The people I've met have taught me that it's not scary to share a meal with someone who mutters and mumbles under their breath to no one in particular; it's actually a moment spent with Christ.Or a mandressed in tatters who'stoo drunk to stand may be drinking to forget thathe doesn'thave proper clothesor a place to go once the sun starts setting.

In the words of Desmond Tutu, "All of our humanity is dependent upon recognizing the humanity in others."

Iam reminded of this everyday as my heart breaks again and again by the injustices in our world, and when my heart bursts again and again with love for people who have changed my life, and altered my perspective, and shattered my prejudices.
