Wednesday - May 7, 2014 From the School Message from Lee Please come help us say a fond farewell to Jennifer Mitchell, who has served as a Middle School science teacher, Middle School Assistant Principal, and All-School Diversity Coordinator. Join us for an informal reception on Friday afternoon, May 30th from 3:30 – 4:30 PM on the plaza between the Middle School and the Athletic Center. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the members of the Upper School Steering Committee and outgoing Upper School PA Co-Clerks Sandi McCoy and Anne Hefter who, along with the many parent volunteers, helped make this school year such a successful one for all. The seniors finished their classes last Friday with the traditional run through the Upper School and have begun their senior projects and AP exams. Congratulations to the Class of 2014! Congratulations to the Chorus for a wonderful spring concert on Friday and to the Orchestra and Jazz Ensembles for their equally stellar performance on Sunday. Kudos to all of our spring athletes for a great season! The schedule for Thursday, May 8 is as follows: • The 9th Grade will spend the day at the National Zoo as part of their Biology classes, rain or shine. Please keep an eye on the weather forecast and help your child dress comfortably for the day. Dismissal will be normal time (2:34 PM). Box lunches will be provided. • The 10th Grade will take the ACT practice college admissions test in the morning and relax together with a movie and popcorn in the afternoon. Dismissal will be normal time (2:34 PM). • Most of the 11th Grade will be taking the English AP Exam and will be dismissed after the exam. Juniors may stay for optional AP U.S. History review sessions from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. • There will be no classes that day. Juniors who are not taking the English AP Exam and who do not wish to attend the AP U.S. History review sessions are not required to come to school unless they have a PE or Athletics commitment, which they must attend. • Lunch will be served and the Library will be open as usual from 7:30 am until 6:00 pm. • PE and Athletics will be held. Please come to the Upper School Dance Ensemble Spring Performance at 8:00 PM in the Athletic Center. The June exam schedule has been posted on the website and please see the guidelines and schedule below. If you have any questions about exams, please contact Mamadou Guèye, Upper School Academic Dean. • All exams start at 8:30 AM and end at 10:30 AM. Students eligible for extended time on exams should communicate with Michelle Schneck, Upper School Learning Support Coordinator. • Make-up day for exams missed due to illness should be arranged with Mr. Guèye. • Students doubling up in a subject should communicate with their teachers and arrange their second exam schedule. • Teachers will communicate second exam arrangements to Mr. Guèye. The purpose of the meeting is to better understand what parents would like the PA to focus on next year. It will be an open forum for parental input, and a moderator will facilitate the discussion. Every Sidwell Friends parent is a member of the PA, and your contributions are extremely important to us. Please review recent PA meeting minutes and bylaws, available here (http://www.sidwell.edu/parents/parents-association/index.aspx), for helpful context in advance of the discussion. If you are unable to attend, please email comments to Gina Kim (ginaskim@yahoo.com) and Janet Whitmore (janetwhitmore@verizon.net). Thank you. US PA Would Like to Say Thank You! If you are one of the many wonderful parents who have volunteered your time at the school, please join us on Friday, May 16th at Zartman House, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Please join us if you have: led a peer group, organized a coffee, chaperoned on a field trip, assembled casseroles or pies, welcomed new students, or helped with any of the many things that parents do to make our kids' school experience a big success! We want to make sure everyone knows that their time commitment, big or small, is very much appreciated! Please RSVP to Sandi McCoy. Parent Volunteers Needed to Join SFS US Newsletter Editing Team We are looking for parents to serve on the Upper School newsletter editing team. This is a fun and easy way to get involved! Join the US newsletter editing team, and you will be able to support our school community from the convenience of your home, and be the first to read the latest news from the school. Contact US PA Clerks Laura Will (laura.will@me.com) or Gretchen Brevnov (gbrevnov@gmail.com) if you're interested. Other News Quaker Quotes "What is the Quaker faith? It is not a tidy package of words which you can capture at any given time and then repeat weekly at a worship service. It is an experience of discovery which starts the discoverer on a journey which is life-long. The discovery in itself is not uniquely a property of Quakerism. It is as old as Christianity, and considerably older." Elise Boulding 1920-2010 US Wednesday Newsletter Submissions How to Submit an Article to the Wednesday Letter.
