European defence forum The European Defence and Security conference, staged by Chatham House, begins in London (until January 25). It examines the role of research, technology and acquisition in European defence and security. US TV goes to market The US National Association of Television Programme Executives (Natpe) holds its annual market and conference in Miami Beach (until January 26). Latin America analysed An international economic forum on Latin America and the Caribbean takes place in Paris, staged by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. It will examine the region’s economic performance and development challenges. Stem cell work presented The two-day Stem Cells World Congress and exhibition begins in San Diego, California. The event includes technology and business tutorials. Paris springs into fashion The spring-summer Haute Couture fashion shows open in Paris (until January 27), including designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior and Givenchy. World’s forests promoted The United Nations Forum on Forests, which promotes the conservation and sustainable development of all types of woodland, begins its latest session of discussions in New York (until February 4). UK cities examined “Cities Outlook”, a report that examines the economic position and outlook for Britain’s leading cities and towns, is launched in London by the Centre for Cities institute. Business travel honours The annual Business Travel Awards are presented in London, with categories covering accommodation, transport and travel management. Tuesday JANUARY 25 State of the Union address Barack Obama, US president, gives this year’s State of the Union address in Washington. Gas issues debated The European Gas Conference in Vienna (until January 28) sees politicians and industry chiefs debating issues such as security of supply, diversification of sources, legislation, and the role of Shale gas. Business support post-2013 A conference on how the European Union can best support business after the end of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme in 2013, takes place in Brussels. Healthcare via the web The European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association stages a conference in Brussels on how internet technology can aid healthcare. London hosts toy show Toy Fair, the toy, game and hobby exhibition, begins its three-day run. Oscar shortlists named Nominations for this year’s Oscars, the 83rd Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Awards, are announced in Los Angeles. Book winner announced The Costa Book of the Year is announced in London, selected from the competition’s five category winners for novel, first novel, biography, poetry and children’s book. Wednesday JANUARY 26 Leaders assemble in Davos Global business, political and academic leaders gather in Davos, Switzerland, for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (until January 30). This year’s theme is how to tackle an erosion of common values that has undermined public trust in leadership, economic growth and political stability. Aviation strategy analysed The UK’s future aviation strategy is the subject of a conference in London. Speakers include Theresa Villiers, transport minister, Colin Matthews, BAA chief executive, and Carolyn McCall, EasyJet chief executive. Topics include capacity, security, taxation, and passenger services. Games on the move The Mobile Games Forum in London tackles over two days the current issues and trends in this fast-growing leisure industry. Gavel to fall on fine wine A Sotheby’s wine auction in London includes a collection of Château Lafite, Château Mouton Rothschild 1959, Château Latour 1959 and Château Haut Brion 1961, expected to fetch £½m. Honours for the quoted Excellence among the UK’s smaller quoted companies is rewarded at the Grant Thornton Quoted Company Awards ceremony in London. Thursday JANUARY 27 Titian for sale at $15m A painting by Titian, “Sacra Conversazione”, is estimated to fetch $15m-$20m at a Sotheby’s sale of old master paintings and sculpture in New York. Holocaust Memorial Day The event is marked throughout the world, commemorating the second world war, and other, genocides. Friday JANUARY 28 Olympic recommendation The UK Olympic Park Legacy Company is due to recommend a preferred bidder for taking over the Olympic Stadium in London after the 2012 Games. The two bidders are football clubs Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
