The top three candidates in the race - Tillis, pastor Mark Harris and tea party and libertarian favorite Greg Brannon - exemplify the dueling factions within the Republican Party, so while Tillis might reject those labels, they are unavoidable. Combine the competitiveness of the state in the general election, and that makes Tuesday's contest the first major test for the GOP establishment - which blames conservatives for opportunities squandered the past two cycles - to demonstrate its power over tea party and evangelical groups in the party's effort to win back the Senate. Tillis has been the beneficiary of millions of dollars of outside spending from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Crossroads." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8cfe33cf59d89f86e7b53b5a800b859b514320ba1e356abdef http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8cfe33cf59d89f86e7b53b5a800b859b514320ba1e356abdef Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul rallied for Brannon Monday in Charlotte: "'The status quo has gotten too strong in Washington, D.C. The Leviathan has gotten too large. ... As we stand here, the debt clock is spiraling out of control. Send us a champion. Send us a hero. Send us a dragon slayer,' Paul said, speaking prior to Brannon in front of a cheering crowd of about 250 outside the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown Charlotte on Monday." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c68d7f70de34ec89770e9ef9f2758708d863dd20f7bcec1e4 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c68d7f70de34ec89770e9ef9f2758708d863dd20f7bcec1e4 FINAL NUMBERS IN THE GOP RACE, via Public Policy Polling on Monday: Tillis 40, Brannon 28, Harris 15, undecided 11. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c4b52d2c27152da2488189963b110c6d44ba3d2b50955a35c http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c4b52d2c27152da2488189963b110c6d44ba3d2b50955a35c SNEAK PEEK - HAGAN BRACKETS TILLIS AHEAD OF PRIMARY: Operating under the assumption that Tillis will win the primary, either today or in the runoff, incumbent Kay Hagan's campaign is circulating a 3-page memo highlighting planned lines of attack against the Republican over the next six months. Hagan communications director Sadie Weiner says that Tillis has made "Akin-like, '47%' comments." They will attack him for his record as House speaker in Raleigh and for taking positions on the right to win the nomination. She sums up the thrust of the Democratic attack: "A long record of offensive and disturbing comments, an agenda that devastated the middle class, a laundry list of out-of-touch positions, and a history of scandal and pay-to-play politics." Read her memo: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c278ee1f66575c55a2b3a71d56d96868979fef619092c9988 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c278ee1f66575c55a2b3a71d56d96868979fef619092c9988 FIVE HOUSE RACES TO WATCH, via POLITICO's Alex Isenstadt: "The maverick (NC-03): [GOP Rep. Walter] Jones is confronting perhaps the most serious political threat of his 19-year congressional career. [Former Bush aide Taylor] Griffin has barnstormed the Outer Banks, casting Jones as a GOP squish and opponent of Israel who is all too frequently a thorn in the side of Republican leaders. ... The speaker (OH-08): No one thinks [House Speaker John] Boehner will lose his primary ... but Boehner, who was first elected in 1990, has had to work harder than in recent primary seasons, airing TV ads for the first time in four years. ... The establishment's fight (NC-07): Three Washington-based groups - the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, American Action Network, and YG Network - [combined] to spend more than $400,000 on ads supporting David Rouzer, a former state senator. Rouzer is trying to beat back Woody White, a conservative favorite and New Hanover County Commissioner ... The celeb (NC-02): American Idol contestant Clay Aiken drew plenty of buzz when he announced that he'd be running for a North Carolina congressional seat as a Democrat. But he hasn't gained much traction. ... The frosh (OH-14): Despite compiling a moderate record in the House, [GOP Rep. David] Joyce's only major Republican opponent is state Rep. Matt Lynch, who's raised just $90,000 - a small fraction of the more than $1.5 million that Joyce has brought in." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c9dd5111ba83290c6fe0d871ad851a87f9c32007d76fd4418 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c9dd5111ba83290c6fe0d871ad851a87f9c32007d76fd4418 BREAKING THIS MORNING - FRANKEN RELEASES FIRST TV AD: Democratic Sen. Al Franken will release the first ad of his reelection campaign in Minnesota, featuring Elizabeth Abraham, the owner of Top Tool, a small Minnesota manufacturing company. In the ad, Abraham talks about Franken's efforts to educate workers for high-skilled jobs. "We've run this business for over 25 years, but today we're having a hard time finding skilled workers. Al Franken understands that a lot of businesses have the same problem," she says. "What impressed me the most is that Al Franken listened to what we had to say. I've never seen anyone work so hard to help small businesses like ours succeed." The ad, backed by a "significant" buy, will run statewide. On paper, he would be liberated: Assuming he sought a third term, he wouldn't appear on the ballot again until 2020, a presidential year that would most likely play in his favor. But opening up is risky business. University of Minnesota political scientist Larry Jacobs said a wittier Franken has shown up lately to speak at university events. 'I don't know if you refer to this as 'new and improved' or 'new and dangerous,'' said Jacobs. 'The thing about Al Franken when he was in the boring mode was he was trying to protect himself from himself.' 'It's a lot more fun to listen to him," he added. 'The downside could be that he runs the risk of an off-the-cuff comment providing an epic moment for Republicans.'' http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c359d2613034e973a40b34a19ea6ec85370d9124a31a9023c http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c359d2613034e973a40b34a19ea6ec85370d9124a31a9023c TEN MAPS THAT EXPLAIN THE MIDTERMS, via Kyle Kondik (at the University of Virginia's Center for Politics) in POLITICO Magazine: "1. 2012 presidential election results ... 2. It represents the first political activity Clinton - a potential 2016 Democratic presidential contender - has engaged in this year. The event is being hosted by Lynn Forester de Rothschild, and the host committee is stacked with other supporters of Clinton, such as Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Jill Iscol, according to a copy of the invitation. It will be held at de Rothschild's midtown Manhattan home, not in the state where Margolies is campaigning." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8cbf14e663dad3e38dbb82a8eedf4f2dcdfb6823a01f578f31 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8cbf14e663dad3e38dbb82a8eedf4f2dcdfb6823a01f578f31 FLASHBACK TO N.Y. TIMES ON SATURDAY: "Mr. Clinton endorsed Ms. Margolies at a fund-raiser he headlined last month, his first and only event for Ms. Margolies since she entered the race a year ago. Her son, her daughter-in-law and Mrs. Clinton have yet to join the campaign. ... The Clintons' relative silence has prompted awkward speculation in Philadelphia that Mrs. Clinton does not want to be burdened by Ms. Margolies's baggage in a state that could be pivotal to her chances in the 2016 presidential campaign, should she decide to run." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c2d1086cc9e6c6c36b80b51571466e9f836354438d7321f22 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c2d1086cc9e6c6c36b80b51571466e9f836354438d7321f22 MORE FROM THE CLINTONS - BILL HOSTS NYC EVENT FOR SHAHEEN: Former President Bill Clinton is hosting a New York City fundraiser for New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, whose race got tougher this spring when Republican Scott Brown decided to run against her. He'll host a lunch event in Manhattan on June 16, according to an invitation obtained by POLITICO; tickets range from $1,000 to $20,000. CNN POLL GIVES GOP MIDTERM EDGE: The latest CNN/ORC poll confirms what other national generic ballot tests have recently shown: the parties are neck-and-neck, which is good news for Republicans. In this poll, it's a slim 1-point advantage for the GOP (46 percent to 45 percent)-and a 3-point advantage among those who said they voted in the 2010 midterms (48 percent to 45 percent). http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8cac00299ba1e4b054fb4477fe4ec9f3ae3489804875a24006 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8cac00299ba1e4b054fb4477fe4ec9f3ae3489804875a24006 TEA PARTY PATRIOTS BACK CLOVIS, HANDEL: The Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund will endorse radio host Sam Clovis today in the Iowa GOP Senate primary, Score has learned. Tea Party Patriots Chairman Jenny Beth Martin says in a statement that Clovis is "as authentic as it gets." This is Clovis's second endorsement from a conservative group thus far - he also has the backing of Citizens' United's political arm. Most polling ahead of the June 3 GOP primary finds businessman Mark Jacobs and state Sen. Joni Ernst battling for the lead, with the other candidates fairly far behind. They also endorsed Karen Handel in Georgia. ONLY IN L.A.-DUELING CAMPAIGN SONGS IN CA-33: In case the race for retiring Rep. Henry Waxman's seat wasn't already quirky enough, the L.A. Times points out that two campaigns have just released original theme songs (one of which was written by Alanis Morrissette). Independent Marianne Williamson's song was written and performed by Morrissette: "I've fallen down, Joan of Arc ailing, systems are failing the mission/I've been taken down, wind from my sails, by tempers that flared and were vicious/I'm going down down down/Unless we start a revolution/Awake from this frozen/Start the mending of our union/Today" And then from Democrat Matt Miller: "Matt Miller, Matt Miller/KCRW radio host you've loved for years/Matt Miller, Matt Miller/He's had public and private sector careers/Matt Miller, Matt Miller/He's improving schools, he's groovin'/Got the nerve and the verve to get the economy movin.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c5602bbc621e22a52626e3c7e974b024c376e5ebfd797ed41 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=3bfdd39e9dcade8c5602bbc621e22a52626e3c7e974b024c376e5ebfd797ed41 QUICK HITS ACROSS THE MAP -KY-Sen: GOP Sen.
