MEGATRENDS - Tampa Bay Times p. 1A, below fold, "Little joy within state's parties: A steady erosion within political affiliations may signal the end of the two-party system," by Mary Ellen Klas, Miami Herald Tallahassee Bureau Chief (Times/Herald Bureau): "This summer ... may ... mark the time America's century-old political parties went on life support. At the top of the ticket, both the Florida Democratic Party and the Republican Party of Florida have anointed presidential frontrunners who are seen by most voters more negatively than positively. Corporate donors ... are circumventing the parties in large numbers by contributing directly to candidates' committees.
"In Florida, the often-reliable bellwether for the nation, party membership is steadily eroding as the majority of new voters don't register with any party and fewer new voters are registering than have in previous presidential years.
"Then there are the casualties. Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the head of the Democratic National Committee, has been targeted for defeat from within by Bernie Sanders ... Jeb Bush ... is so disgusted by Donald Trump and his message he has announced he won't vote for his party's nominee. And GOP candidates in Hispanic-rich South Florida are keeping their distance from the frontrunner." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=579a5dcfb13258b00c6b96c928353c80d38b5aa6ac4123534c8841b50fcc68a7
NEW YORK MAG cover story, "Hillary Clinton's Candidacy Was Never Going to Be Easy. But Did It Have to Be This Hard?" by Rebecca Traister: "[T]here is something about the candidate that is getting lost in translation. The conviction that I was in the presence of a capable, charming politician who inspires tremendous excitement would fade and in fact clash dramatically with the impressions I'd get as soon as I left her circle: of a campaign imperiled, a message muddled, unfavorables scarily high. To be near her is to feel like the campaign is in steady hands; to be at any distance is to fear for the fate of the republic. ...
"'There is no doubt that she has to walk a narrower path than some other politicians,' a frustrated Nick Merrill told me on the day of the Bill Clinton ['in charge of revitalizing the economy'] comments. Merrill, her press aide, was irritated by the willingness of the media to blow the remark into a fantasy scenario, at their refusal to believe the campaign's clarification that no, there was no 'official' role secretly being planned ... 'When she says something - not even off-script, but gives a stump speech and talks about her husband and uses fewer words or less-exact words than she did the week before - it's hard to put that toothpaste back in the tube. There's an assumption that there's
some underlying secret.'
"And this is the rub exactly: Everyone assumes Clinton is harboring an underlying secret. It's a paranoiac cycle - Clinton and her team think that everyone is after her, and their behavior creates further incentive for everyone to come after her." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=579a5dcfb13258b0be5c124b404619dda7b7cd0f62844939e17ee4ae705699f3

JOHN PODESTA MEMO -- "Campaign Chairman: Clinton Knows Email Setup Was A 'Mistake,'" by BuzzFeed's Ruby Cramer: "The 600-word letter from John Podesta, Clinton's chairman and longtime adviser, addresses the IG report's various findings, but comes back to a single point again and again: that Clinton knows the use of a personal email server was a 'mistake. ... If she could go back, she'd do it differently.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=579a5dcfb13258b07a5ead4e1bb76e5a49c679a8fc9d4e667a87e9f3c027331d

FALL CAMPAIGN - "Shady accounting underpins Trump's wealth: The GOP nominee is rich. But how rich depends on odd accounting and subjective criteria," by Morning Money's Ben White in New York: "Trump claims a net worth of more than $10 billion and income of $557 million. But he appears to get there only by over-valuing properties and ignoring his expenses. ... Some financial analysts said this, and a very low tax rate, is why Trump won't release his tax returns. ... And he is selling assets and increasing debt in ways that suggest a man scrambling for ready cash. ...
"The Clinton campaign wants to portray Trump's business empire as a Potemkin Village, showy on the surface with little underneath. ... Democrats have leading forensic accountants poring over all of Trump's public records and disclosures with a plan to release whatever they find to support this narrative as the campaign shifts into general election mode this summer and fall." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=34a56bbe331ce75ca4935a31579e316468021ced27e76ee8356c3c69047d9c1b ... FUN READ - "From Ike to Obama, CIA has briefed presidential candidates," by AP's Deb Riechmann: "Started by President Harry S. Truman, the briefings are designed to get the candidates, before they walk into the Oval Office, up to speed on problems around the globe. Truman, who was Franklin D. Roosevelt's vice president for almost three months before Roosevelt died, first learned about the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb only 12 days into his presidency, and he pledged not to leave any future commander in chief behind the ball." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=34a56bbe331ce75c091cfc0c62904928df1f048c2b3f20a57c156dc1e474b284

DATA DU JOUR - "Millennials match Baby Boomers as largest generation in U.S. electorate," by Pew's Richard Fry: "Millennials, who already have surpassed Baby Boomers as the United States' largest living generation, now have caught up to the Boomers when it comes to their share of the American electorate. As of April 2016, an estimated 69.2 million Millennials (adults ages 18-35 in 2016) were voting-age U.S. citizens - a number almost equal to the 69.7 million Baby Boomers (ages 52-70) ... STATE OF THE ART - "On cutting-edge voter data, Trump critically behind Clinton," by AP's Tom Beaumont in Philly: "Trump spent more than $1 million in April on campaign paraphernalia like caps, T-shirts and signs ... [and] spent less than a third of that amount on data and related functions such as telemarketing. Obama's 2008 presidential campaign revolutionized the way technology could be used to identify and keep track of supporters ... In 2012, Obama's re-election campaign profiled potential voters by monitoring what online, mobile, reading and shopping choices they made. ...
"Clinton's campaign has been collecting data since she announced her candidacy 11 months ago. Elan Kriegel, an analytics director for Obama in 2012, now heads Clinton's analytics team. And, Jeremy Bird, credited with using the data in 2012 for decision-making that preceded the president's re-election, is advising the Clinton campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=34a56bbe331ce75c731861ebe4fe70a680cd76454a9b14d5413523a83d199313
DAILY DONALD -- "Can the World Survive A Perpetually Combative President Trump? Trump's view of humanity as uniformly hostile and vicious is unrealistic-and possibly dangerous," by Aaron David Miller of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, for Politico Magazine: "[T]he world is a place in which America probably can't afford to be in a constant state of counterattack, and where every challenge isn't a nail that requires a hammer. ... What if hiding behind the bullying, ... there lies a real president in waiting, calm, preternaturally prudent and wise just waiting to get out and to assume his place in the pantheon of presidential greats? ** A message from the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI): Hurricane Season is right around the corner. Home, auto, and business insurers are committed to assisting policyholders in need, quickly and efficiently. Insurers have a strong track record following even the most devastating of natural disasters. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, insurers settled more than 130,000 flood claims, with only one percent of claims going to litigation. The private insurance sector paid more than 1,500,000 million Sandy claims from all other insured losses, with less than one percent going to litigation. But there is still work to be done. Insurers are looking at new tools and methods
to improve our response after natural disasters. The industry also is working with Congress to make improvements to the flood insurance system.
