Hunter- Let us know if you need more info. *Renewables* · World’s fastest growing energy source · Renewable power generation grew by an estimated 5% in 2015 and now accounts for around 23% of total electricity generated globally. · Dollar investment in renewable sources growing in 2015 to nearly six times its 2004 total. This is even with a decline in fossil fuel prices and lower investment by European countries. o China is largest investor in clean energy in 2015- 17% increase to $110.5bn o US is 2nd, which invested $56bn, up 8% on the previous year and the strongest figure since the era of the ‘green stimulus’ policies in 2011. o Europe again saw lower investment in 2015, o Europe and US combined investment= $114.5 bn (greater than China) o A number of “new markets” together committed tens of billions of dollars to clean energy last year. These include Mexico, Chile, South Africa and Morocco. o Africa and the Middle East are two regions with big potential for clean energy, given their growing populations, plentiful solar and wind resources and, in many African countries, low rates of electricity access. In 2015, these regions combined saw investment of $13.4bn, up 54% on the previous year. · In the US: o The production and use of biofuels and nonhydroelectric renewable energy sources doubled from 2000 to 2014 o In 2014, renewable energy sources in the United States accounted for about 10% of total U.S. energy consumption. About 13% of U.S. electricity was generated from renewable energy sources in 2014. o Growth driven by state and federal government mandates (2013 Climate Action Plan) and incentives (tax credits) o Use of renewable fuels expected to continue to grow over the next 25 years- The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that the United States will use nonrenewable fuels to meet most of its energy needs through 2040 *Geothermal* · Geothermal production and use in the US and internationally continues to grow at a sustained rate. · US is the world leader in online capacity and the generation of electricity from geothermal energy o *.*4% of total US electricity from geothermal. In 2014, 7 states had geothermal power plants · 28 countries had geothermal power plants in 2012, which generated approximately 68 billion kWh of electricity. The Philippines was the second-largest geothermal power producer after the US at 10 billion kWh of electricity, which equaled approximately 15% of the country's total power generation in 2012. Iceland, the seventh-largest producer at 5 billion kWh of electricity, produced 30% of its total electricity using geothermal energy. · Benefits of geothermal 1. Clean- most plants emit no greenhouse gases and consume less water 2. Available 24 hours a day, produces energy at a constant rate 3. Homegrown- reduces dependence on foreign energy resources 4. Renewable resource- comes from heat within the earth -- *Joan K.
