Life as a JV is about spending time with people- others and yourself, and the divine in each. - Ellen Quinn (Billings, MT '15-16) JVC Northwest News Celebrate 60 Years of Service Wherever You Are Not able to join us for our Seattle and Portland Events, but still want to help us celebrate and honor 60 years of service to those in need? Consider making a 60th Anniversary Gift to JVC Northwest today! Your support makes our program, and the meaningful impact it has on volunteers and vulnerable communities alike, possible. Gifts made throughout our anniversary year will be used to support and empower the next 60 years of Jesuit Volunteers—so here’s to the next 60! Jesuit Volunteer EnCorps (JV EnCorps) is now accepting applications for 2016-17! Jesuit Volunteer EnCorps (JV EnCorps), a program of JVC Northwest, facilitates transformative opportunities for intentional service, community, and spiritual formation for older adults committed to social and ecological justice. During their ten months of part-time volunteer service, participants ages 50 and older meet together regularly in community to deepen their spirituality and explore the values of simple living and social & ecological justice. JV EnCorps groups are now in Bend, Portland, Seattle, and Spokane! Priority application deadline: August 15th. For more information, call 503.335.8202 or click here to apply. Help fill the final JV positions! It's not too late to encourage people to apply We're excited to officially be re-opening a JV community in Woodburn, OR in the 2016-17 service year, so we're looking to fill a few final JV positions! Can you help spread the word that we're looking for applicants? You can share this blog post from Ellen Quinn, a current JV serving in Billings, MT, plus more details on the open positions: share our blog post, share this Facebook post, or retweet our tweet. FJVs' and friends' encouragement makes all the difference! Wish the '15-16 Jesuit Volunteers a fond farewell Send a note to our outgoing JVs The coming months are filled with excitement, sadness, uncertainty, celebration, and goodbyes for our Jesuit Volunteers as they transition from JV communities to new opportunities across the globe! JVC Northwest wants to honor these JVs with well wishes letters, postcards, and notes from our large network of former volunteers, friends, and family- but we need your help! Consider sending a community (perhaps even the community where you served) a quick note of celebration, advice for the transition, or general well wishes over the summer months! Email Sarah for mailing information for the current JV Communities. Save the Date: JVC Northwest "Homecoming" Sponsored by Portland Alumni Council The Portland Alumni Council, a group of younger former JVs (FJVs) whose mission is to engage with Portland-area FJVs through events and activities while also gaining Board development skills, is coordinating an FJV “Homecoming” event at St. Ignatius Parish on September 17, 2016. The planning is underway but you can expect dancing, good food and drink, games, and maybe even a balloon arch. Interested in helping coordinate and/or attending? Email Outreach and Events Coordinator, Zach, to get connected, and check back here for more details in the coming months! Also, if you served as a JV in the last 10-15 years and are interested in learning more about the Portland Alumni Council, email Zach, to learn more. New members will be invited to join the PAC between July and September, so check in today. Letters to Incoming JVs Each year, at the concluding Friday banquet at Orientation, incoming Jesuit Volunteers receive letters from the former JV community with advice, stories, and wisdom, usually a mix of all three. If you are interested in writing a letter to a specific locale (Omak, Boise, Anchorage, etc.) or just a general letter to any JV community, please send them to Zach. These letters could be two lines or two pages, it's completely up to you. Thanks for thinking about the '16-17 Jesuit Volunteers! AmeriCorps Visits Alaska The chance to make real change is drawing volunteers to Alaska Wendy Spencer, Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, visited Alaska to meet with AmeriCorps members across the state and hear their stories of service. In early June, she met with our JV AmeriCorps members during her travels to Bethel and Anchorage! Read more about Spencer’s visit with our members from Alaska Dispatch News. Do you have a blog, book, movie, podcast, song, poem, article, etc. you want to share? Email Sarah Israel Bayer, Executive Director of Street Roots, addresses Homelessness in America at a Tedx event in April 2016. Street Roots is one of JVC Northwest's partner agencies in Portland, OR. The Simunye Project is rooted in the concept of simunye—Zulu for “we are one.” Michael Bakan (Georgetown University ’19) and Drew Descourouez (Santa Clara University ’19) have been transformed by stories from Soweto, South Africa, both those they have heard and those they have shared. In collaboration with the Ignatian Solidarity Network, they will return to South Africa to collect and document stories from people around the country through their storytelling project called “The Simunye Project.” Click here to follow their journey.
