To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) ** Trapped ------------------------------------------------------------ Almost 46 million people are living as slaves globally with the greatest number in India but the highest prevalence in North Korea, according to the third Global Slavery Index launched today, as Reuters reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-slavery-index-data-idUSKCN0YM1YO ) . Dive Deeper: The Global Slavery Index can be accessed here (http://www.globalslaveryindex.org/findings/) . “Modern Slavery Explained: What is it and What Can I do about it? (http://www.smh.com.au/world/modern-slavery-explained-what-is-it-and-what-can-i-do-about-it-20160531-gp8l7u.html ) ” by the Sydney Morning Herald’s Latika Bourke. ** NK Banking Attacks ------------------------------------------------------------ Evidence is emerging of links tying a spate of Asian bank breaches involving the SWIFT network to North Korea's malicious hacking Lazarus Group. The evidence has been brought to light by Aaron Shelmire, senior threat researcher at cyber-security threat intelligence company Anomali, as SC Magazine reports (http://www.scmagazineuk.com/north-korea-link-surfaces-in-swift-banking-attacks/article/499702/ ) . Meanwhile, as the Wall Street Journal’s Gordon Lubold and Alastair Gale report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/north-korea-missile-launch-likely-failed-south-says-1464658577 ) , US officials confirmed that North Korea tested an intermediate-range ballistic missile in a launch Tuesday, but concluded that the launch failed, agreeing with an earlier South Korean determination. Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Victor Cha today authored a new Korea Chair Snapshot: "Cyber Attacks on Commercial Banks Possibly Linked to North Korea (https://www.csis.org/analysis/cyber-attacks-commercial-banks-possibly-linked-north-korea) .” Plus, CSIS’s Evan Ramstad penned a Korea Chair Platform: "South Korea’s divided government now faces major changes in North Korea, China and, possibly, the US (https://www.csis.org/analysis/south-korea%E2%80%99s-divided-government-now-faces-major-changes-north-korea-china-and-possibly-us ) .” ** Hold on Iran ------------------------------------------------------------ Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine (Va.) and Chris Murphy (Conn.) are pushing to extend sanctions on Iran until President Obama can guarantee its nuclear material is for peaceful purposes. The two Senators have introduced legislation that would extend the Iran Sanctions Act, currently set to expire at the end of the year, "in order to effectuate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in guaranteeing that all nuclear material in Iran remains in peaceful activities,” as Jordain Carney of The Hill today reports (http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/281771-kaine-murphy-push-iran-sanctions-extension ) . Dive Deeper: Brookings Robert Einhorn and Richard Nephew have authored a new analysis: “The Iran Nuclear Deal: Prelude to Proliferation in the Middle East (http://www.brookings.edu/research/reports2/2016/05/iran-deal-regional-proliferation ) .” Plus, CSIS’s Sharon Squassoni has created an interactive timeline that details the Iran nuclear “Implementation Plan (http://jcpoatimeline.csis.org/) .” ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 40% ------------------------------------------------------------ Forty percent of the world’s estimated 45.8 million slaves are in India. Source: Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-slavery-index-data-idUSKCN0YM1YO) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “These countries don't play by the same rules as we do, so there is a close connect between criminal groups and the state. In North Korea, the criminal groups are the state." ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s James A. Lewis on alleged links between North Korea and recent cyber-attacks against banks. Source: US News & World Report (http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-05-27/north-korea-linked-with-hacks-stealing-from-banks) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo by S. Alemdar/Getty Images for Maybelline.) A court in Istanbul today found a former Miss Turkey, Merve Büyüksaraç, guilty of insulting the country’s president, handing down a 14-month suspended sentence, which could see the model sent to jail if she reoffends within the next five years, Reuters reported (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-turkey-erdogan-court-idUSKCN0YM1LP) , citing local media. Ms. Büyüksaraç was detained last year by Turkish authorities for sharing a poem on Instagram. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo credit: H. I really like it like that. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ New, “New Speedway Boogie” If you’ve been reading this Smiles space you know that I cannot say enough about “Day of the Dead,” a fantastic journey of a new tribute album out for just a few weeks now—featuring over 60 artists paying tribute to the Grateful Dead. What is so fascinating about this 6 CD set (over 5 hours of digital music) is that it’s not a record of oldsters paying homage to the ultimate old guys. It’s curated and produced by the ultimate hipster band, Brooklyn’s indie sensation, The National, and features music from an array of today’s most intriguing young sonic explorers. Take Australia’s 28 year-old rocker Courtney Barnett who is becoming a big star. She ignited Jimmy Fallon’s stage last week with her new version of the Dead’s classic “New Speedway Boogie,” a song Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter wrote about the disaster that ended the Woodstock era—the Altamont Speedway concert in 1969 when the Rolling Stones hired the Hell’s Angels outlaw motorcycle gang to work security. Barnett was born in 1987, and she breathes new life into this masterpiece of a dark but historically important song…"One way or another, this darkness has got to give… (http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/courtney-barnett-new-speedway-boogie/3043258 ) ” ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
