1,611 DAYS to Nov. 3, 2020 -- "2020 contenders struggle to maneuver around Trump: Cruz, Rubio, Cotton, Sasse, Walker and Ryan prepare for political life after Trump," by Alex Isenstadt: "The 2016 GOP convention is still weeks away, but would-be contenders - from Ted Cruz to Tom Cotton - are already laying groundwork for the next Republican presidential primary. While some are lining up blue-chip staff, scheduling trips to early primary states and setting up political action committees, others are huddling with the party's biggest financiers. ...

"[Sen. Tom] Cotton [Ark.] has been forward in his aspirations. Since he was elected to the Senate in 2014, he's traveled to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. His aides are building out an aggressive travel schedule in the weeks to come. Next week, Cotton will venture to Southern California to appear before an Orange County GOP gathering. And in August ... he will be a guest at a motorcycle-and-barbecue-themed political event hosted by Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst. ...

"Cotton is also expanding his political team. One recent hire ... Dorinda Moss, a former [NRSC] finance director who was a top fundraiser on Rubio's 2016 campaign." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f8943014097747c9d0504a5e29633fa65bf7dbacb72753ed7b36b012

DRIVING THE DAY - "On Monday morning, House Republicans will release a new website for their 'A Better Way' policy agenda rollout: better.gop. The website will be updated frequently as the pieces of the agenda are rolled out. The site is 100% responsive" to look good on all devices. www.better.gop

NEW HILLARY VIDEO "highlighting the rebuke of Donald Trump's comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel from prominent Republicans. This video is the latest in a series of #GOPDisunity videos." Cameos by Newt, Ana Navarro, Mitch McConnell, Bob Corker, Paul Ryan and Jake Tapper, George Stephanopoulos, Chuck Todd and Chris Wallace http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f8943014bed0bb9c6a71afdb6e95f73b8e9a4abb377852eca9288589

ZEITGEIST - L.A. Times A1, above fold, "Trump courting trouble: The candidate's attack on a Latino judge and other racial comments pose major risks for the Republican Party," by Michael Finnegan: "His comments came after months of violent and racially charged clashes at his rallies between his overwhelmingly white supporters and protesters, many of them Latino or African American. Riot police are routinely deployed outside Trump's events, ... a sign of potential trouble at next month's Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

"Aside from the social implications in a nation with a wrenching history of racial strife, Trump's escalating attacks on the judge have unsettled top Republicans who are fretting over the party's fate in November." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f8943014a885eac10c8d44b6f873fe03d16735cbb7f9dd6ea9687e79

THE MAP --Tampa Bay Times, bottom of A1, "Down ballot, Trump's a worry: In Miami-Dade, voicing support can doom a campaign. Even the next state House speaker won't talk about him," by Tallahassee bureau chief Steve Bousquet: "More than half of Miami-Dade voters are Hispanic ... Since [Romney lost the county], Miami-Dade has become even more diverse, and the Republican share of the county electorate has narrowed as more voters reject both major parties and have no party affiliation." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f894301410cf759c9506846b86fec5e9c0da05d4b8ed6cc32468a605

DELEGATE MATH - "After weekend wins, Clinton on cusp of Democratic nomination," by AP's Catherine Lucey and Lisa Lerer in Sacramento: "After blowout weekend wins the [Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico], Clinton is now 26 delegates short of the 2,383 needed to win the nomination ... Clinton now has 1,809 pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses; Sanders has 1,520. When including superdelegates, ... her lead over Sanders is substantial: 2,357 to 1,566." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f8943014f622317451b60b86998f85779cbafa08748db1671bfd7216

THE NARRATIVE - San Francisco Chronicle, top of A1, "Clinton edges nearer pivotal victory:Delegate total rises before key California vote," by John Wildermuth: "'It is extremely unlikely that Secretary Clinton will have the requisite number of pledged delegates to claim victory on Tuesday night,' after the primaries in California and New Jersey, Sanders said at a news conference in Los Angeles. 'Now, I have heard reports that Secretary Clinton has said it's all going to be over on Tuesday night. I have reports that the media, after the New Jersey results come in, are going to declare that it is all over. That simply is not accurate.'

"But Clinton, who would become the country's first female presidential candidate from a major party, continued to state that Tuesday's primaries will be more than enough to push her over the top." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f89430144cec4702ab6a72ab3cff16b1233f44ffdaac7a1d7ccc57b5

58 DAYS TO RIO - Boston Globe, bottom of p. A1, "Crime feared at Rio Olympics Despite security steps, risk remains for athletes, fans," by Shira Springer: "'Zika is one of many safety and security concerns leading up to the Rio Olympics, but it's not the only one,' said Juliette Kayyem, who served as President Obama's assistant secretary for intergovernmental affairs at the Department of Homeland Security. 'I fear that Zika has distracted us from other threats that people could face. ... I think everyone will be throwing money at the problem, and holding their breath for two weeks." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f8943014029bdc4723d12c613f1e060942dd441de69fec845ef61982

--"Rio-Filthy Water: When Rio fails, sister city shows sewage cleanup possible," by AP's Jenny Barchfield in Niteroi, Brazil: "In Rio's Olympic bid document seven years ago, authorities pledged that an extensive cleanup - which included collecting and treating 80 percent of the city's sewage - would be one of the games' enduring legacies, but it simply never happened: An ongoing study commissioned by The Associated Press has shown that rowers, sailors and marathon swimmers will be exposed to waters so filthy they're roughly equivalent to raw sewage. ... Several athletes fell ill while training last year." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f8943014a40fbab15a92461db5abd6371a9cc84ce6f1744771fab00c

GLENN THRUSH PODCAST -- Gary Johnson declares war on Trump's border plan -- In this week's "Off Message" podcast, Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson tells Glenn Thrush that Donald Trump's immigration rhetoric is "racist" and "incendiary." The usually mellow former New Mexico governor says he's had Latino friends targeted by Arizona's restrictive immigration law, "They've got a sticker on their back of their window of their car, 'I'm an American,' ... They have resigned themselves to carry their papers ... To me that is deeply offensive ..." With Americans pining for a reasonable third-party candidate, Johnson knows it's all about being recognized in the polls - "The crux to this whole
thing is just getting my name in the polls ... Come on. Put us -- put our names in the poll." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f89430146c04596a4da2aebf2b28a437b1b7a99341fc41ff092dbcb7 ... STUFF TRUMP SAYS - "Trump says he made 'a lot of money' in deal with Gadhafi," by AP's Jill Colvin in Jersey City: "Trump [told John Dickerson on 'Face the Nation' that] he made 'a lot of money' in a deal years ago with Moammar Gadhafi, despite suggesting at the time he had no idea the former Libyan dictator was involved in renting his suburban New York estate." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=eb49bef8f89430149dcf87be89177a2d7686cb0767398000602a189fed983acc

--TRUMP: "I made lot of money with Gadhafi. If you remember, he came to the country and he had to make a deal with me because he needed a place to stay, and he paid me a fortune, never got to stay there. And it became sort of a big joke."
