06/10/2016 07:53 AM EDT By Heather Caygle (hcaygle@politico.com or @heatherscope) WARREN, CLINTON MEETING THIS MORNING: Just hours after Sen. Elizabeth Warren endorsed Hillary Clinton (and gave a speech roasting Donald Trump), she's set to meet with the presumptive Democratic nominee later this morning, according to the Washington Post, fueling talks about a potential slot on the presidential ticket: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28aef886d294f950a7f52f123fae6547522e103a817327ec2698 RYAN TALKS TRUMP'S VEEP: No, House Speaker Paul Ryan isn't throwing his hat in the ring as Trump's running mate. But he did tell Hugh Hewitt what he'd like to see in Trump's VP pick: "You have to have a VP who's ready to step up and be president at any moment, but also a vice presidential candidate who can articulate the policy of the forthcoming administration, and can delineate the differences," he said in a segment this morning. "And that's something, there are a lot of capable people. I'm sure there's a good list that's being developed." Ryan on Clinton's email server scandal: "There are certain standards that we expect among our elected officials, not least of which is the president of the United States. And those standards are that we believe in the rule of law, and we believe in holding ourselves accountable to the rule of law, and that we should not live above the law," he told Hewitt. "That, to me, is one of the cardinal sins that Secretary Clinton violated." Curiously, Donald Trump's name only came up once during the interview and in passing, nonetheless. HATCH AND ALI'S UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP - As friends and family prepare for Muhammad Ali's public funeral today, John Bresnahan brings us this great story on the unlikely friendship between the boxing great and Sen. Orrin Hatch, a speaker at today's service: "Politics makes strange bedfellows, but there may be no odder couple in recent American political history than Orrin Hatch - the white, rock-ribbed conservative Utah Republican and Mormon - and Muhammad Ali, the most famous boxer ever, African-American icon and Muslim convert. Yet the two had a friendship that lasted decades, up until Ali's death last week at age 74." Hatch on Ali: "I have to say that it was one of the great friendships that I've had in my lifetime," Hatch told Bres in an interview Thursday. Ali on Hatch: "He's a capable man and he's an honest man. And he fights for what he believes in," Ali told Insight Magazine in 1988. The first meeting: "Hatch and Ali first meet in 1988, when Ali made an unannounced stop at Hatch's Senate office to thank him for helping a friend get confirmed to a federal post. ... Ali and Hatch - who did some amateur boxing himself - took to each other quickly. Ali ended up traveling to Utah and campaigning for Hatch's reelection that year. Hatch later brought Ali to meet his parents, and Hatch's mom made friend chicken for the three-time heavyweight champion." Don't miss this story: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28aeb198c1bf9782b3e580e44d0be9eba148d7ed044970c45060 FINALLY FRIDAY Y'ALL, June 10. Good morning and thanks for reading POLITICO's Huddle, your go-to tipsheet on all things Capitol Hill. Your Huddle host is headed to the Gulf Coast for a weeklong (and long-planned) beach vacation. Burgess will be taking the reins next week, but don't worry, I'll be back. Be sure to send him tips and scoops for Monday: beverett@politico.com Fun fact about Burgess: He's an A+ photo-bomber. Don't believe me? Exhibit A from Thursday: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28ae7dc6be5183002b78b7f04568754546f4a6779b2dae0ba07e TODAY IN CONGRESS - The House meets at 9 a.m. with votes on the legislative branch funding bill-you know, the one that permits sledding on Capitol grounds-later in the morning. And words I never thought I'd write on a Friday: The Senate gavels in at 8:15 a.m. (!!) with a 9:00 a.m. procedural vote related to the defense authorization. AROUND THE HILL - Reps. Filemon Vela, Juan Vargas and Luis Gutiérrez hold a 10:00 a.m. conference call on Republicans, the Latino community and federal judge Gonzalo Curiel, the target of Donald Trump's recent attacks. Email Jasmine.Mora@mail.house.gov for call-in information. THIS WEEKEND - On Saturday Rep. Mimi Walters will be speaking at the Women's Congressional Staff Association's career development conference. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. in the Capitol Visitors Center with Walters speaking at noon: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28ae3b29fa3ba2a4764ff771384e26db09e47d3024d851a1ce2c ** A message from Visa: The U.S. migration to secure chip credit and debit cards continues to gain traction. Well, that comment has been giving Republicans headaches while bringing Democrats glee. The Hill: "Ryan's remarks quickly became a Democratic talking point used to batter vulnerable Senate Republican incumbents," Alexander Bolton and Scott Wong write, noting that Democratic group American Bridge pushed out releases hammering several vulnerable Senate Republicans shortly after Ryan's comments. 'Nobody was happy with Paul': "Senate Republicans won't criticize Ryan publically because they don't want to pick a fight with the top-ranking House Republican and or be seen as defending Trump's comment, which many thought was dumb. But they have concerns about whether Ryan is thinking enough about how his actions affect the party's chances of keeping control of the Senate." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28ae4a42e87627211daae2e8d6cf5b4655d3c4a61429fb6a0d6f IF HE WALKS LIKE A RACIST - While Republican leaders struggle to find the best way to respond to Trump, retiring GOP lawmakers can be much more candid since they don't have a reelection to worry about. Your Huddle host caught up with retiring Rep. Reid Ribble, a long-time critic of Trump, to get his thoughts: "It's a difficult spot for Republicans because of the racist tone he's taken the last couple of weeks. And I've always said, 'if something walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's likely a duck.' And so if he talks like a racist and acts like a racist, he's likely to be one," Ribble told me, also making similar comments to CNN earlier in the week. -Related read: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell "comfortable" with backing Trump but won't rule out rescinding that support. SLEDGEHAMMER -- The New York Times on Warren's endorsement of Clinton (finally) and looking beyond: Democrats' "sledgehammer is Senator Elizabeth Warren. ... In her day job, Ms. Warren cuts an imperious swath through the Capitol, striding down hallways, her jewel-toned jacket swaying behind her, refusing to speak to or even make eye contact with reporters. Small talk with elevator operators and other staff? Not her style. And the Democrat from Massachusetts is rarely front and center pushing major legislation. But beyond Mr. Sanders, no one captivates the aggrieved, angry left the way Ms. Warren does." And don't miss the kicker, a situation Hill reporters know all too well: "After the lunch, two reporters followed Ms. Warren down a hallway to discuss her role in the party, her attacks on Mr. Trump, Mrs. Clinton, or even the barbecue she just ate. An aide repeatedly asked them to leave, as Ms. Warren pretended to examine the paint on the hall ceiling." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28ae643bfdce50db66208726bbbfe14a2d64c744b3c1522c3d3d -Warren: Ready to be commander in chief http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7fc0181c3a2b28ae596ed34bd47d6c8d7afe5b0db425680210b685992f2536e8 BOEHNER'S SUCCESSOR JOINS FREEDOM CAUCUS - John Boehner's successor is joining the very caucus that had a hand in the former speaker's sudden resignation last fall. The House Freedom Caucus met Tuesday night and vote to extend newly sworn-in Rep. Warren Davidson an invitation to join the group. HFC Chairman Jim Jordan was an early backer of Davidson, a former Army Ranger who just won election Tuesday. LABOR OF LOVE (AND DUCT TAPE) - A true southerner knows that duct tape can fix anything-and I mean anything-even the rust bucket on wheels that Sen. Richard Burr affectionately refers to as "The Thing." And now, with a looming July 1 deadline, pressure is on for the Senate to act: "Following months of internal wrangling, the U.S. House of Representatives, on Thursday passed legislation creating a federal control board to help Puerto Rico cope with crippling debt that is wreaking havoc throughout the island's economy" What's next? "Given the overwhelming support in the House and a looming July 1 deadline for Puerto Rico to make a $1.9 billion debt payment, senators may be hesitant to delay or tinker very much with the bill." Calhoun were all chairman of the Senate Finance Committee at separate times. TODAY'S TRIVIA - I'll take today's question: When and where did the Senate first vote to make its legislative sessions public? The first person to correctly answer will get a mention in Monday's Huddle. Visa's global fraud rate is less than 6 cents for every $100 transacted - which is about one-third the fraud rate experienced in the 1990s. And, we're continuing to reduce fraud with advances like chip technology, encryption, fraud analytics and tokenization. Chip protects in-store payments by generating a unique, one-time code needed for the transaction to be approved, while tokenization, replaces a card number with a digital account number so your personal information is never shared with merchants. Visa's fraud protection is designed to give consumers and merchants the confidence that Visa is the best way to pay and be paid, whether in store, online, or on a mobile device.
