Hunter - As the Tea Party caucus gets set to shut down the Department of Homeland Security in a fit of rage over President Obama's immigration executive action, there's one big loser few people are talking about: The Coast Guard. While the full extent of the fallout isn't entirely clear, one thing is for certain: come Friday, for the second time in two years, 40,000 active duty Coast Guard members will be forced to report to work ... without pay. TSA and Border Patrol agents would also be forced to work with out pay, and tens of thousands of headquarters staff would face furloughs. Join VoteVets and sign our petition urging Congress to pass a clean bill funding the Department of Homeland Security, and the United States Coast Guard. http://action.votevets.org/coast-guard Using active duty and retired Coast Guard members as political pawns in this argument should remind you of Tea Parry efforts last year to hold veterans' health care, education, and job training over the extreme right-wing desire to drive America to war with Iran. Now it's happening again. From the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906, the flooding of the Mississippi in 1927, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and countless other national responses, the Coast Guard has been among the first to respond to countless disasters across the country. The institution deserves better than partisan bickering. Sign our petition calling on Congress to fund the Department of Homeland Security: http://action.votevets.org/coast-guard A lot can happen between now and Friday, but we wanted to make sure veterans, military family members, and VoteVets supporters had the opportunity to make their voices heard about the impact to the Coast Guard if the Tea Party shuts down the Department of Homeland Security.
